Tipp Girls Tennis sweeps Alter on Senior Night
With the Tippecanoe girls tennis seniors being honored before their non-conference tennis match last week, the Red Devils made quick work of their opponents before the storms hit. Tipp shut out the Knights 5-0 to continue their solid week of tennis.
The singles teams of Maddie Lieber, Jillian Schroeder, and Addy Lange all won their matches, as did the doubles teams of Mary Waibel and Eleanor Spangler, along with Samantha Kozen and Penny Bathgate.
“We played pretty well, being on senior night and not getting to warm-up at all,” said Tipp coach Jack Romer. “We came out and started hot and kept the momentum up.”
He noted Lange had a tough match at third singles but pulled out the big win.
“She was down 3-0 and won six straight games to win 6-3,” Romer said. “That was the match of the day.”
“Both doubles competed pretty well, they were pretty confident at the net.”
Lieber continues to put together a solid season with her victory against Alter, after coming off a tough loss to Sidney the previous night.
“She bounced back after a tough three-set loss yesterday,” Romer said. “She came out today and played her game and frustrated her opponent. She had great groundstrokes today and was placing the ball well.”
Schroeder also had a solid day, and one word describes her game according to Romer.
“Jillian is just consistent,” the Tipp coach said. “We know how she is going to play every day. She just comes out with a positive attitude, hits the ball really hard, places the ball well, and just wins.”
Both of the doubles have been very solid all season long, and that continued in this match with victories.
“Combined I think they have all lost five doubles matches all year, so they have been steady,” Romer said.
Tipp also defeated Sidney 4-1 in MVL action.
“We came out and battled the heat and toughed through it,” Romer said, as second and third singles and both doubles won.
Also, Tipp knocked off Greenville 4-1 in another league match.
“Greenville is an up and coming program and have gotten a lot better,” the coach said. “Their doubles are very solid, so we had two tough doubles matches. We battled through and got the wins. It was a good MVL win.”
Tipp remains unbeaten in the MVL and played Butler last night, trying to hold onto the slim lead in the conference. The MVL tournament is set for tomorrow.
