Could Tipp City See a Store Like Indiana’s New Meijer?

TIPP CITY — A new Meijer Grocery opening in Fishers, Indiana, next week offers a visual example of the kind of grocery we may be getting on Tipp City’s west side.
The Fishers Meijer location, holding a grand opening on September 30, includes a full-service grocery store designed to serve a growing residential area. A similar development has been mentioned as a potential future use for the Long Property west of Tipp City.
Despite community excitement, no official plans, commitments, or construction timetable for any grocery store in Tipp City have been announced. What has happened is this: Tipp City Council recently authorized the city manager to enter into a real estate purchase option contract with Meijer Stores Limited Partnership. It is not a final sale or a guaranteed store construction agreement; rather, it gives Meijer a six-month option to purchase a defined portion of the former Long property. However, the possibility reflects continued interest in expanding grocery, retail, and service options for residents as development continues throughout Tipp.
At approximately 75,000 square feet, the Meijer in Indiana is notably smaller than a traditional Meijer supercenter, like the ones in Troy and Huber Heights, which typically measure about 150,000 square feet or more. Even so, the Fishers store is a substantial full-service grocery, with fresh produce, meat, a pharmacy, and a fuel station nearby.
Even though this store has a smaller footprint, it could bring new jobs and additional commercial activity to the area. It could keep dollars in Tipp City, reducing the need for residents to travel outside Tipp City for larger-format grocery shopping.
The Fishers store is part of Meijer’s officially named “Meijer Grocery” format, a smaller, grocery-focused version of the retailer’s traditional supercenter. Meijer has used the model in Orion Township, Macomb Township, Rochester Hills and Livonia, Michigan, as well as in Noblesville and Fishers, Indiana. Store sizes have varied from approximately 47,000 square feet in Rochester Hills to 90,000 square feet in Noblesville; the Fishers store measures 75,000 square feet.
Meijer introduced its grocery-focused format in 2023 as a smaller-footprint alternative to its traditional supercenters, allowing the retailer to enter communities and development areas where a larger building may not be practical. The format is intended to provide a streamlined shopping experience centered on weekly grocery needs while retaining many of the departments customers associate with Meijer.
The Fishers project illustrates how a major grocery retailer can become part of a broader commercial and residential growth area. Whether a similar development moves forward on the Long Property remains to be seen, but the discussion points to the importance of long-range planning for Tipp City’s western gateway.
