Tipp makes statement with 42-0 win over Butler
After an opening quarter that saw Tippecanoe hold a slim lead over Butler last week in their MVL football showdown at City Park, the Red Devils took over the game with a huge second period. From there, Tipp held a 35-point halftime lead and rolled to a 42-0 victory over the Aviators.
With the win, Tipp moves to 4-1 on the season while Butler loses their first game of the year. With Butler being a Division Two team, Tipp gained a lot of computer points as they head into the second half of the season this Friday against Sidney.
“We talked a lot about getting off to a fast start,” Tipp coach Matt Burgbacher said after the game. “We knew we were going to get their best shot, we had to weather that storm at the beginning and stay true to what we were doing. We couldn’t have scripted it any better.”
“We wanted to keep the pressure on them. They did some things in their first couple of series that we had not seen on film, and we knew we were going to give up some competitions and yards, but that is our defense. We bent, but we never broke.”
Tipp broke through late in the opening quarter when Larkin Thomas scored from four yards out to give Tipp a 7-0 lead. He had scored on the previous play from over 20 yards out, but he was called out of bounds on a questionable play. But the senior came right back on the next play and put Tipp on the board.
The Red Devils then drove inside the ten after holding Butler on downs. They finished with a short touchdown run by Thomas, pushing the lead to 14-0 with 8:40 left in the half.
Two long runs on their next drive set up a two-yard scoring run by Colston Artz, pushing the Tipp lead to 21-0 at the 4:12 mark.
James Merry's huge hit on the Butler quarterback forced a fumble that Luke Graham recovered, setting up another Tipp score. An 18-yard run by Thomas made the score 28-0 with 2:35 left in the quarter.
An acrobatic interception on the next Butler drive by Talan Hoover gave the ball back to Tipp with just over a minute left in the half. They drove 70 yards capped by a 12-yard run by Artz, giving Tipp a running clock in the second half and a 35-0 lead at halftime.
The Red Devils capped off the scoring on a 15-yard pass to Grant Titley giving Tipp the final points of the game.
“I loved the effort our kids gave and how they prepared this week,” Burgbacher said. “That’s what wins games on Friday nights. Everyone sees this out here, but they don’t see Saturday through Thursday and what our kids did.”
Tipp now heads to Sidney on Friday night.
