Tipp stops Bethel 3-2 in scrimmage action
As the Tipp boys soccer team heads into the start of the season this weekend, the Red Devils battled a very solid crosstown rival from Bethel to a 3-2 scrimmage final last weekend at the stadium.
The two teams were tied 2-2 at the half only to see Tipp score in the second half and hold off the Bees for the scrimmage win. Now things start for real for both teams as the official start of the regular season is this week around Ohio.
“We love (coach) Bob (Hamlin) and his staff and made a nice friendship with them. It was fun today, and today was a big scrimmage for us because they are in our sectional,” Tipp coach Joel Slyman said. Bethel moves into Division Three, the same division the Red Devils have been in.
“We felt good about our performance and we played hard. It was a good result on a hot day for both programs.
Tipp had goals in the first half from Mason Lopez and Logan McEntyre. The Bees scored on a shot in the upper corner to actually take a 1-0 lead, and later a penalty kick to send the game to the half knotted at 2-2.
“The two scrimmages we have played, we have gone down a goal,” Slyman said. “The guys have been resilient coming back through adversity, which I love. It’s a good sign early in the season.”
Scoring the lone goal of the second half was Tipp freshman Wesley Mayer. The Red Devils held off the Bees in the final ten minutes and earned the victory.
Slyman was also happy to see how the kids dealt with the adversity he mentioned, whether it was officiating, injuries, or weather.
“You try to handle yourself mentally when you can’t control the outcome, so you have to control what you can control,” he said. “You have to control your play and how you react to things.”
Slyman has been pleased with the first couple of weeks of practice with a younger team, as they open the season this Saturday night against Bexley.
“We have so many inexperienced varsity players, but what I like is that the guys really come to work,” Slyman said. “They are hungry and don’t want to ride the coattails of the teams a couple of years ago. They want to build their own legacy.”
