Tipp football has productive opening week of camp
Championship programs don’t start on week one of the season in August. It is a process that lasts all year long with a lot of offseason work.
One of those key events takes place in the summer with football camp, which saw three days take place last week. And many more coming up in July.
Three days were spent at the stadium with the coaching staff and returning players as they look to prepare for the upcoming season. Coach Matt Burgbacher feels the returning kids are ready to continue the success, as their first week was even more than just going over what they learned. It was about the newcomers putting pressure on the veterans at camp.
“From Monday to today, it has been completely different,” Burgbacher said. “We are in a great place right now. These boys retained a lot, and we are able to move on a little bit faster.”
“The first week of camp we put in what we need to put in. We did that, but we put in a lot more. The biggest difference I have seen this year is this younger group we have is pushing these older guys. They have retained a lot from middle school.”
“This week was a big week also because we are big on culture,” he said. “We want to strengthen our culture, and these guys have done a great job with everything we did.”
The coach mentioned that since all levels of football in the football program do the same thing, it was easier to progress through the week.
“We all do the same thing, on varsity we just do a little bit more,” Burgbacher said. “We can get a bit more creative with the varsity kids. We have been able to get that stuff in now. We can work on that over the next five weeks during workouts before we get back out here for our next workout on July 6.”
“We have a quarterback back, a three-year starter. We have an offensive lineman back, Cal Connors, who is a three-year starter, so those guys can be those leaders in those position-specific groups.”
“It’s the same on the defensive side of the ball. You have guys who have played there for a few years.”
Tipp will return to the field the first week of July, and Burgbacher expects the players to be ready to go, retaining what they worked on at camp.
“We expect a lot from them, and the standard is the standard,” he said. “The big thing is, it is not a review time. We need to attack, and over the next five weeks we will be able to do that with workouts and watch some film.”
