Von Krosigk falls in opening round of state
Tippecanoe senior Nick Von Krosigk fell short at the state tennis tournament. He lost in his opening-round match to Owen Hawley of Upper Arlington 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 to finish his season at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason.
Von Krosigk, who set the Tipp record for both wins in a career and wins in a season, appeared at the state tournament for the second time in his career.
“What a great experience for him to even reach the state level,” Tipp coach Kaci Matthews said. “Unlike other sports, there are only two divisions for tennis. We are the 161st biggest Division One school in Ohio. Upper Arlington is the 17th biggest.”
“They did a great job at the state tournament and getting to play at the Linder Tennis Center is an experience in itself.”
Despite the pressure and surroundings of being in the state tournament, Matthews said Von Krosigk handled himself well.
“Nick did a good job not letting the moment get too big for him with a steady head,” Matthews said, stating his teammates and alumni were there to support him. “It is a great testament of who he is.”
Von Krosigk lost his opening set 6-2 as he was working to establish himself at the state tournament.
“He came out and was trying to get used to that pace again, and the kid who he was playing did a really good job,” Matthews said. “Owen came out steady and didn’t have any unforced errors. He matched Nick’s pace, and Nick has gears, and he came out in gear one.”
“In the second set (which Von Krosigk won 7-5), Nick started pushing toward Hawley’s weaknesses, attacking a little bit more. He got up to gear two or three with his footwork getting around the ball a little bit more and his first-serve consistency started raising, and he pulled out that second set.”
In the third set, Hawley was in control for the 6-1 victory.
“Nick dropped back down to that first gear. We tried to schedule some hard matches through the year to go three sets. Every time he had one of those matches, he won in two sets. Pushing a third set, he didn’t have those during the season.”
“There was a little bit of fatigue in the third set.”
Von Krosigk ends his career with 110 wins at Tippecanoe and recorded 30 wins this season, which is also a school record.
