Vintage Tipp
To honor the 250th Anniversary and Memorial Day, the May Tippecanoe Historical Society articles will not be a mystery picture, but will honor veterans from Tipp City.
Ahijah W. Miles was the first in our area to enlist in the Union Army in 1861. He was a fearless bearer of the flag, which is scarred and bullet ridden, is on display in the Ohio Museum.
He was in the battles of: Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, and was with Sherman on his March to the Sea. He was honorably discharged in 1865.
Among his Tipp City accomplishments: Postmaster, organizer and first teller of Tipp National Bank, President of the Board of Education, secretary of Monroe Building & Loan, secretary of Maple Hill Cemetery, treasurer of the village and Monroe Township, and the Baptist church. He belonged to Tipp City F. & E. Lodge and the D.M. Rouzer Post of the G.A.R.
Mr. Miles died on December 3, 1933, from complications of a fall shortly after his 94th birthday. Flags were flown at half mast, financial institutions closed at noon, and all businesses closed between 3:00 and 4:30 p.m. during his services, typifying the esteem in which the deceased was held. Much more information can be found in our files about his family and his beautiful home on the corner of 4th and Main that was destroyed by fire in 1988.
The museum will only be open from 10-12 on May 16 so our volunteers can attend services for Gordon Honeyman. For questions or information, call 937-698-6798 or 734-845-620.
