Tipp with dominant win over Indians
After a close first game against the Piqua Indians, the Tippecanoe baseball team went back to work against the Indians in the second game of their season series, earning a 13-1 victory in five innings to improve on the season to 5-3. It was Tipp’s fourth win in a row.
Cayden McKinney pitched a gem, going all five innings, allowing only four hits and striking out eight.
“I am just really proud of the effort by the kids all the way around,” said Tipp coach Cameron Dickens. “The energy was great from the first pitch. We put together great at-bats one through nine.”
“Cayden was great on the mound like always. The goal for us is just to be consistent day in and day out.”
Things started fast for Tipp, scoring twice in the opening inning before putting the game out of reach an inning later. Noah Fox had a big day and doubled in his first at-bat. Ethan Harney later walked, before Carson Jackson later drove in a run with a ground out, giving Tipp a quick 1-0 lead. The next batter, Brady Liskey doubled to bring home Harney and the Red Devils plated two runs in the opening inning.
In the second, the wheels fell off for Piqua. McKinney tripled to lead off the inning, and Colston Artz drove him in with a single for Tipp’s third run of the game. Eli Kettel then singled before Fox doubled in a runner to make it 4-0.
Bryce Eckert made it 5-0 with a hit, and Jackson doubled to center to plate two more runs and the Red Devils had a seven-run lead. After a walk, a single for James Merry and ensuing error brought home the eighth run of the game for Tipp. McKinney grounded out for the ninth run, and the barrage ended on a passed ball, allowing Merry to score, and the Red Devils enjoyed a 10-0 lead.
Tipp scored again in the third when Liskey’s ground ball brought in a run, then closed out the scoring with a two run single from Fox in the fourth.
Fox led Tipp with his three hits, and they finished with 13 hits on the night.
*In a non conference game, Tipp defeated Fairmont 13-5 behind a 16-hit attack. Merry and Eckert each had three hits to lead the Red Devils' offense, while Fox and Liskey both added two hits.
Fairmont led 4-1 after three innings, but Tipp came storming back late. They scored three in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh to put the game away.
Dehus got the win in relief for Tipp, pitching over two scoreless innings. Harney picked up the save.
