Softball falls to Wayne, edges Piqua
It was a fast start for the Wayne Warriors last week as they came to town for a non-conference softball battle with Tippecanoe, who was fresh off their big win over Piqua the night before.
Wayne scored six times in the first two innings and made it stand up for an 8-4 victory over the Red Devils on a chilly afternoon.
“It was a rough night,” said Tipp coach Charles Tackett. “We didn’t come out and play our game, which is good defense and clutch hitting. We gave them way too many extra outs throughout the game, and we didn’t hit with runners in scoring position.”
The Warriors scored on their first at-bat when Benson doubled to lead off the game. Hames drove her in two batters later with a double, giving Wayne a very early 1-0 lead. Tipp pitcher Jaina Drum escaped the inning without any more runs scoring, and the Red Devils survived the Wayne start.
An inning later, the Warriors went back to work, Serrano singled to lead things off, and after an error, Wayne scored two more runs on a single from Laichalk. A passed ball later in the inning allowed Wayne to score their fourth run of the game.
Wayne made it 6-0 on hits from Benson and Corbin in the top of the fourth, while Tipp continued to struggle to come up with the big hits. In the bottom of the fourth, Charlize McCormick and Strawser singled but were left stranded.
Tipp finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Jocelyn Shelton singled to lead off the inning, and Roo Snell followed with a hit. Strawser was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Drum was hit by a pitch to bring home a run. Lockwood then added to the attack for Tipp when she singled to score McCormick and make it 6-3.
Wayne scored twice more in the seventh, and with one final chance, Tipp tried to make a comeback. With two outs, McCormick singled in a run, but Tipp could not do any more damage, and they took the loss.
*Also last week, Tipp defeated Piqua 8-7 after they scored six runs to open the game in the first inning, then held on to earn the tough win.
Strawser led Tipp with three hits in the game, while McCormick was the only other Tipp batter with multiple hits.
