Tipp softball completes sweep of Xenia

Battling Mother Nature last week, the Tippecanoe softball team finished a two-game sweep of Xenia in Miami Valley League action. They closed out a 15-0 run-rule victory over the Xenia Buccs on a day where the cold and rain was prevalent at Tippecanoe Middle School.

With the win, the Red Devils improved to 4-2 overall and sat atop the conference standings at 2-0.

“Tonight was a tough one because of the weather, and sometimes the kids don’t get in the right mindset. I tried to get them refocused,” said Tipp coach Charles Tackett. “It is always good to get a league win, that’s two against Xenia. These league wins are very important right now since we want to contend for a league title.”

“Offensively, we put a lot of balls in play. We put bat on ball, and that’s what we needed to do,” he added, praising the bat of Roo Snell, Jocelyn Shelton, and Davis, all with a couple of hits. “I respect their coaches trying their best to get the program better.”

Tipp put an eight spot on the board in the opening inning as Davis led off with a walk, Shelton singled to bring in Davis and Snell walked. Charlize McCormick then singled to load the bases. Strawser reached on an error to make it 2-0 and starting pitcher Jaina Drum helped herself by reaching on an error to bring in the third run for Tipp.

Lilly Hept then had a crazy at bat as all of the runners, and Hept came into score on two errors on the play by Xenia, making it 7-0 still in the first inning. Snell capped the scoring in the first inning to give Tipp an eight run lead after their first at-bat.

Drum tripled in a run in the second, part of a four run inning as Tipp led 11-0. In addition to her bat, Drum pitched a complete game one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

“Jaina threw well with two walks and nine strikeouts,” Tackett said. “Early in the game, she was working behind in the count a little bit, but as the game went on, she really got ahead of the hitters.”

Tipp finished their scoring with four runs in the third and closed out the game in a five-inning run-rule.

Tipp also won the day before, 16-3 over Xenia, behind three hits each from Snell and Drum.
