Tipp Volleyball turns tables on Butler, share MVL title

One month ago, the Butler volleyball team dominated Tippecanoe at the Student Activity Center to take the lead in the Miami Valley League. With everything on the line last Thursday night, the Red Devils made a statement of their own.

In championship fashion, the Red Devils continued their recent success with a 25-5, 25-15, 25-18 victory over the Aviators, giving both teams a share of the league title. Tipp has been on a big run lately, winning on the road at MAC powerhouse Versailles, then defeating the number one D5 team in Ohio Coldwater also on the road, then sweeping Sidney, who leads the other division of the MVL. Now they head into the postseason ready to defend their state title with an easy win over Butler.

“It comes down to execution and being consistent in the things that we are good at,” said Tipp coach Howard Garcia. “We are good at serving and serve receive and that allows our arms to be alive which you saw tonight.”

“We have to stay poised and composed which we did not do the first time at their place and we made a lot of bad decisions. Today, we made very few mistakes.” Garcia added Tipp only had one error in the opening set and six in the second set.

Tipp came out and blitzed the Aviators in the opening set, jumping out to a 15-3 lead behind 10 straight points from Abbi Mader and Lexi Luginbuhl controlling the net. The Red Devils never looked back and cruised to the easy win.

Game two was closer, including a 6-6 tie but Tipp never trailed. The Red Devils led 16-12 then began to pull away, with Ava Jones adding key service points to help close out the second game.

Game three was much closer and competitive until Elynn Downing reeled off three consecutive points with Tipp holding onto a 15-13 lead and never looked back, closing out the match.

Mader led Tipp with 14 kills and ten blocks along with seven aces. Liv Hiser added 13 kills and eight digs, while Siefring had 15 digs and Jones 30 assists.

Also last week, Tipp defeated Coldwater 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 15-11 to knock off the top team in Ohio in Division Five. They also defeated Sidney 25-7, 25-10, 25-22.

“We had our back against the wall, and we made a statement tonight of who we think is the best team in the area,” Garcia said.
