Total domination as Red Devils secure MVL football title

A statement was made last Friday night.

With all eyes focused on Memorial Stadium in Troy for the game between the top two football teams in the Miami Valley League, Tipp made an emphatic statement.

The Red Devils secured a home playoff game, and this week can win the league title outright, as they cruised past the Trojans 35-0.

“It wasn’t pretty in the first half, but we didn’t want to give up the big play,” Tipp coach Matt Burgbacher said. “We wanted to force them to take another down and we were fortunate to get a couple turnovers.”

“We executed the game plan to a T both offensively and defensively, and that last drive to end the game, that was Tipp football. We had a lot of guys step up tonight and in big games, bit players step up.”

It didn’t take Tipp long to get on the board as they held Troy to a quick punt on their first possession, and on the return, Bentley Heckman brought it back 57 yards for a touchdown

Cade Havill then picked off the Troy quarterback on the next drive and returned it deep into Troy territory, but a Red Devil field goal was later blocked.

Tipp turned the ball over on their next possession when they were picked off by the Troy defense, but Talan Hoover returned the favor with his own interception for Tipp which led to a five yard touchdown run from Larkin Thomas to make it 14-0.

In the second half, Tipp took the opening kickoff and Levi Jones capitalized on his big day with a short touchdown run to extend the lead to 21-0.

Jones scored again early in the fourth to make it 28-0, and when the Red Devils scored on a short run with under two minutes left, the game became a running clock and the Red Devils finished off Troy and improved to 8-1 on the season.

“It’s all about one week at a time and we have one more week to finish the regular season the right way,” Burgbacher said. “We have clinched a share of the league title, but we are not in a sharing mood and want to win it outright.”

One of the players who caught a lot of attention with his solid play was Jones, who ran at will in the victory.

“He is a young man who has bought his time and continues to do what we want him to do,” Burgbacher added. “After week one he dominated in the JV game and we gave him his opportunity and when that comes, you have to be ready.”

Tipp hosts West Carrollton on Friday night, which is also Senior Night, kickoff at 7pm.
