Tipp Volleyball celebrates seniors with win over Fairborn

The Tippecanoe senior volleyball class has a lot to celebrate during their career. Not only will they always be state champions, but as they walked off the floor with a win over Fairborn. They had a clear view for a share of the MVL championship tomorrow night hosting Butler. If Tipp handled Sidney last night, that goal will happen at 6:30 tomorrow night at Tippecanoe High School.

First up was a match against a very improved Fairborn team. Tipp earned a 25-15, 25-14, 25-10 victory over the Skyhawks. Tipp had a bit of a slow start battling throughout the opening game of the night.

“Fairborn is much improved with a lot more control,” Tipp coach Howard Garcia said. “They don’t have the size as we do, but with that said, the first set isn’t what they did, rather what we didn’t do.”

“We had some questionable decisions with nine errors, which shouldn’t happen. But if you have good swings and the ball goes long, I can live with that. What we can’t do is get an easy ball that you make the other team work, they give it to us, and we don’t capitalize on it.”

Fairborn’s last lead of game one was 7-6, but Tipp could never pull away. The Red Devils finally put together a nice run once it was 15-14, scoring seven straight points from Skylar Carrier and strong net presence from Abbi Mader and Lexi Luginbuhl. Tipp scored 10 of the last 11 points to put the opening game away.

Tipp won game two again after the game was close early on. The Red Devils pushed the lead to 16-8, then used solid serving from Ava Jones and steady play from Liv Hiser to extend the lead to 21-11. They never looked back in the set.

Jones reeled off seven consecutive points in the middle of the third set to give Tipp an easy win and complete the sweep.

Tipp recorded 44 kills on the night, including 13 from Luginbuhl, while Mader added 12 and Hiser 11. Luginbuhl added four blocks while Faith Sieffring recorded 15 digs and Hiser had 11.

Jones led Tipp with 25 assists, and Cora Cooper added ten.

Tipp also defeated Piqua last week 25-13, 25-10, 25-13.

“We have to prepare ourselves now for what’s ahead,” Garcia said, referring to Butler tomorrow and the upcoming tournament. “A game is won when you take advantage of the mistakes of the opponent.”
