Tipp Girls Soccer stuns unbeaten Legacy Christian
Not only were the seniors recognized before the girls soccer game against Legacy Christian this past Saturday, but the Red Devils made a huge statement heading into their biggest regular season game of the year.
Tipp knocked off Legacy 3-2, a team that entered the game as the state’s top-ranked Division Five team and boasted a 14-0-0 record. The Red Devils built a 3-1 lead on a late penalty kick and held off Knights to hand them a first loss of the season.
“This was an awesome test on our senior night,” Tipp coach Brent Palmer said. “They are the number one team in Ohio in their division and have scored 109 goals on the year and given up eight. It was an awesome matchup, and it was a postseason atmosphere.”
“The girls rose to the occasion and pulled it out.”
Tipp really was in control for most of the game, peppering shots at Autumn Allport for much of the first half. Kenzie Curry knocked one off the top post inside of the opening minute, then two minutes later, Julia Burgbacher floated a long shot that was headed to the goal before Allport recorded the save for Legacy.
Maryn Perrault had a couple of good shots on goal and Mady Turner ripped a shot from 20 yards out that was saved by the Knights keeper.
Finally with 10:49 left in the opening half, one finally hit paydirt. Burgbacher ripped a 20-yarder from the left side that eluded Allport, to give Tipp a 1-0 lead. Ellie Lukacs picked up the assist on the goal for the Red Devils.
That is how the first half ended before the Red Devils struck quickly in the second half. Perrault found the net just 40 seconds into the half, pushing the Tipp lead to 2-0.
Ava Combs, the main threat for the Knights, knocked one in from 25 yards out with 20:36 left in the game to close the gap to 2-1. With under two minutes left, Tipp scored what turned out to be a huge goal.
Grace Fultz scored on a penalty kick with 1:41 left to make it 3-1 for Tipp. It turned out they needed that goal because Legacy scored again with 28 seconds left in the game.
“I thought we did a great job of bending and not breaking,” Palmer said after the game. “It was two teams that wanted to win tonight, and you call that how they competed. Physical game but super fair I thought. We are happy with the result.”
“It was awesome how the seniors got to enjoy tonight. They have been a big part of what we have done over the last four years. They have a lot more to give this season.”
Tipp hosts Butler tonight at 7:15 for the MVL title, and complete results are coming next week.
