Vintage Tipp

The Tippecanoe Historical Society mystery picture is of a small house that sat across the street from the Dairy Queen. It was torn down to make way for the fire station.

It held the first school in Hyattsville. In 1839, it was the closest school for Tippecanoe students and was on what was called Greenville-Springfield Road. When enrollment reached 107, the town saw the need for a bigger school building. The city purchased .25 acres east of the canal for $15 and built a 20-foot-by-24-foot frame school for $13.30. This became district No. 9 for Tippecanoe.

This information is from Susan Furlong's book "Tippecanoe To Tipp City The First 100 Years.

The Tippecanoe Historical Museum, on the corner of 3rd and Walnut, will be open 10-2 through December 20 and reopen in March.  For information or to make an appointment, call 937-698-6798 or 734-845-6520.
