Tipp Volleyball sweeps Indians to remain unbeaten
Even though the games were a bit closer than many thought they would be, the Tippecanoe volleyball team swept three games from Piqua last week in Miami Valley League action, 25-15, 25-19, 25-12. They remain atop the league standings going into a big week this week.
Tipp hosted Sidney last night (with one league loss), travels to Butler tomorrow (unbeaten), and Beavercreek on Saturday.
“We just made the mistakes that are not supposed to happen,” Tipp coach Howard Garcia said. He mentioned that Tipp did a good job with serve receive, serves and defense, but can still clean it up a bit.
“If you look at the stats, we had 43 kills. They had 15 but the score reflected something else. The game is about the decisions you make, and in any sport you will make errors. The key is what are you going to do when the errors occur. Sometimes we get into that little funk. We have great arms and size, we just need to stay consistent when those easy plays occur.”
Tipp built an early lead in the opener 10-5, before Piqua had some plays to cut the deficit down later in the first set. The Indians closed the gap to six at 19-13 before Avery Gagnon had a couple of serves to help Tipp close out the game late. Lexi Luginbuhl served out the game with the last three points, with a big kill from Abbi Mader to seal the game.
Piqua battled much better in set two and was trailing 17-15 before kills from Luginbuhl and Liv Hiser got Tipp back in control, outscoring Piqua 8-4 down the stretch for the win.
Game three was easier for Tipp as they built an 11-5 lead and never looked back. Luginbuhl had a stretch of points while they were building their lead, then Faith Siefring reeled off six straight points to all but seal the game, pushing their lead to 18-7. Luginbuhl served the final three points of the day.
“We are still trying to find our way out there,” Garcia said.
*Tipp also defeated Fairborn 25-6, 25-12, 25-13 for their seventh win of the season.
“We came out of the gates very hot with consistent serve receive and lots of good swings,” Garcia said. I love that we held Fairborn to only 10 kills, and most of our errors were solid swings, just long. The setters did a great job moving the ball around and with great tempo. All in all, we played very well.”
Mader led with 14 kills, four blocks, with seven digs. Luginbuhl added 12 kills and five aces. Hiser recorded nine kills and three blocks, Siefring led with 12 digs, and Claire Bailey had 29 assists.
