Balanced attack leads Tipp Girls Soccer past Stebbins
Similar to the boys game the night before, the Tippecanoe girls soccer team overcame a slow start in their MVL contest against Stebbins. The girls turned it on with a big second half leading them to a 7-1 victory over the Indians.
Multiple players scored for Tipp as they now sit alone at the top of the conference with a perfect 4-0 league record. On the same night, Troy defeated Butler 1-0 to drop the Aviators one game behind the division-leading Red Devils.
“We were a little sloppy to start, but I thought we did a good job keeping possession,” Tipp coach Brent Palmer said. “Stebbins was super organized and put a lot of defensive pressure on us, one of the more organized Stebbins teams I have seen in a while. Credit to them.”
While the Red Devils did have shots on the Stebbins keeper in the first 20 minutes, none could find the net. Both Isabelle Mahl and Ellie Lukcas missed on good shots fired at the keeper. With just over 11 minutes left in the half, Tipp finally broke through.
Julia Burgbacher ripped one past the Stebbins keeper to give the home team a 1-0 lead and they were not done in the half. Marin Dakin added a goal with 1:14 left when she knocked in a shot from 15 yards out over the keeper's head to send the Red Devils up 2-0 at the half.
The floodgates opened in the second half, starting at 37:18 when Maddie Hook found the net to give Tipp a 3-0 advantage.
Ten minutes later, Kettel scored again from ten yards out and just over a minute later, Dakin scored her second goal to give Tipp a 5-0 lead at the 26:15 mark of the second half.
After Stebbins broke the shutout, the Red Devils tacked on two more goals to put the game away. Kelsey Zeh scored her first career goal for Tipp with 9:49 left in the game. Then as the clock ticked just under five minutes, Sawyer Ridge scored her first goal off an assist from Paige Royse to close out the scoring.
“Both Kelsey and Sawyer work really hard every day and deserve this,” Palmer said.
“We have a lot of girls who can score and are not reliant on one or two pieces. That will do a lot of good things for us at tournament time.”
Tipp is on the road this week at Miamisburg, West Carrollton, and Carroll.
