Beneath the Surface: Exploring the Lewisburg Cave Haunt

Ohio has plenty of haunted attractions that can deliver a good scare. Some have elaborate sets, some rely on talented actors, and others use impressive special effects to make visitors feel like they have stepped into another world. But something is particularly unsettling about walking into a place where the walls, floors, and ceiling aren't props. They are real.

Located roughly 80 feet underground in a limestone cave at 4392 Swishers Mill Road in Lewisburg, the Lewisburg Cave Haunt offers an experience unlike most traditional haunted attractions. The haunt takes visitors deep underground into a world of horror, where the natural cave itself becomes part of the attraction.

The Lewisburg Cave Haunt is open Fridays and Saturdays from September 12 through October 31, 2026.

The attraction has collected numerous accolades over the years, including being voted the best haunt in the United States by USA Today readers in 2018. It has also received a Best of Dayton award, consecutive Haunt of the Year honors, and recognition from Hauntworld, including Best Actor and Climax awards.

But awards only tell part of the story.

The legend surrounding the cave is where the experience truly begins.

A Legend Beneath the Earth

According to the official story, the location's history begins in 1850, when Flavius Wilson built an open-pit mine while searching for useful, marketable minerals.

Nearly 90 years later, miners supposedly began feeling an inexplicable urge to dig deeper into the earth. Although they claimed they were searching for limestone, something about the underground drew them farther down. The digging eventually revealed a network of caves.

Most of the miners supposedly recognized the danger and returned to the surface. One miner, Claude Burroughs, however, ventured farther into the newly discovered underground world.

What he found was not what he expected.

Burroughs discovered what appeared to be a beautiful, euphoric sanctuary hidden beneath the earth. He returned to the surface and convinced family, friends, and neighbors to join him. Soon, according to the legend, people from far beyond the area were being drawn into the underground community.

Their fascination with the mysterious world eventually attracted a stranger known as Reverend Dickens.

At first, Dickens presented himself as a benevolent preacher who had come to save the souls of those living underground. But at midnight, he revealed his true identity, and the idyllic underground village transformed into something much darker.

The walls seemed to reveal hellscapes, swamps, decrepit churches, ruined homes, laboratories, prisons, and chambers of torture. The villagers became prisoners, forced to survive the horrors of their new home.

One captive, Irma Whistler, managed to escape the underground maze and return to the surface. Although her soul was supposedly forever changed by what she experienced, she warned others about what was waiting below.

Few believed her.

And that is where the legend of the Lewisburg Cave Haunt continues today.

The story, written by Teri Davis, gives visitors a narrative to follow as they descend into the cave and become part of the legend themselves.

An Experience Unlike Other Haunts

After moving to Ohio and experiencing several of the area's haunted attractions, I have found plenty of local haunts that are impressive in their own ways. Yet Lewisburg Cave Haunt has always stood out to me and remains one of the first experiences I recommend whenever someone asks where they should go for a good scare.

The difference becomes apparent before you even enter the cave.

As you arrive and make your way toward the attraction, red lights illuminate the trail leading toward the mouth of the haunt. The atmosphere builds before the first actor even appears.

Then you enter the cave.

At that point, the environment itself becomes part of the horror.

No ordinary haunted-house walls separate you from the attraction. You are surrounded by the natural limestone formations of a real cave. The darkness, confined spaces, and winding passages create an atmosphere that would be difficult to recreate anywhere else.

The actors add another layer to the experience. Their performances bring the story to life, with scares seemingly waiting around every corner. Even visitors who consider themselves veterans of haunted attractions can find themselves caught off guard.

And that is one of the things Lewisburg does particularly well: it knows when to make you feel safe.

Just when you begin to relax and think you understand what is coming next, the haunt finds another way to catch you.

But the experience isn't limited to what you see.

Sound, darkness, movement, special effects, and the natural environment of the cave all work together to keep visitors on edge. Elaborate animatronics and effects appear throughout the attraction, giving visitors plenty of details to take in as they make their way through the cave.

If you are someone who likes to stop and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into a haunt, there is plenty to see.

But stopping for too long may not always be the best idea.

The cave's winding passages can leave you questioning where you have been and where you are going. At times, the maze-like layout can make it feel as though you are traveling in circles, adding to the feeling that you may never actually find your way back out.

The natural cave setting also evokes the underground horror found in films such as As Above, So Below. Instead of simply watching characters attempt to escape an underground nightmare, visitors are placed directly into one.

You are left wondering what is waiting around the next corner, and whether you are actually getting closer to the exit.

More Than Just a Haunted Cave

While the Haunted Cave is the main attraction during spooky season, visitors can also experience other parts of the Lewisburg mine.

The Mine Wagon Tour offers a completely different experience. The approximately 40-minute historic tour explores the Lewisburg Limestone mine and the area's mining history. Unlike the Haunted Cave, the Mine Wagon Tour is not scary and takes visitors into a different section of the mine.

It is also home to Ohio's largest brown bat habitat, meaning visitors may have the opportunity to see bats during the tour.

For families looking for a Halloween activity without the scares, the cave also hosts Trick or Treat Underground! on October 24 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. During the event, monsters hand out candy throughout the cave, but the attraction's props and sounds are turned off and there are no scares.

Everyone entering the cave needs a ticket, and adults are welcome to participate in the trick-or-treating as well.

Surviving the Cave

Once you finally make your way out of the Haunted Cave and back to the surface, the experience isn't quite over.

Visitors can grab a beverage, warm themselves by the fire, and take a moment to recover from what they just experienced. Merchandise is also available for those who want a souvenir or simply want proof that they survived the depths.

And survival is part of the fun.

Every year brings another opportunity for the Lewisburg Cave Haunt to change and expand the experience, giving returning visitors something new to discover while maintaining the elements that make the attraction so memorable.

For me, that combination is what keeps Lewisburg Cave Haunt at the top of my list.

It isn't simply a haunted house built inside a building. It isn't just a collection of actors and special effects. It is an attraction built around a real piece of Ohio's underground history, using the cave itself as one of its most powerful effects.

This Halloween season, if you're looking for something beyond the typical haunted house, consider heading underground. Just remember the warning from the legend: once you enter the depths of Lewisburg Cave, finding your way back out may be easier said than done.
