Cincinnati Open: Fils Makes History, wins Men’s Singles

The Tippecanoe Gazette was there to watch the Men’s Singles Finals, held Sunday night, August 23, in Cincinnati, OH. Frances Tiafoe made the second set interesting but couldn’t hold off Fils’ relentless serves, which consistently reached over 120 mph. The first and second sets seemed to set up an epic third set match-up, but the energy was too much for Tiafoe. From the Cincinnati Open official press release:

“History was witnessed on Sunday when Arthur Fils defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 in the first-ever ATP Masters 1000 final between two Black players. The 22-year-old is the first Frenchman to win the Cincinnati Open since Guy Forget in 1991. Fils will move up to a career-high ranking of No. 11.”
