Titley geared up for final year at Tipp
Featured Athlete Of The Week
It was a year to remember for Tippecanoe senior Grant Titley. Not only was he a key part of the state final four football team, but he was also crucial to the Tipp boys track team, which placed fourth overall at the state tournament.
That trip to Columbus was very special and still fresh in the mind of Titley, and he will always cherish that experience with his teammates.
“Qualifying for the state meet was one of the biggest accomplishments of my athletic career,” he said. “It was super exciting to compete at Ohio State against some of the best in the state, and while it was definitely nerve-racking, I was even more excited because I knew how much work it had taken to get there. I overcame a lot of mental and physical challenges throughout the season, so earning a spot at state was very rewarding.”
“Competing at that level taught me that you must rise to the occasion and embrace it because opportunities like that are far and few between. It also motivated me to keep improving and showed me what it takes to compete with the best.”
“Sharing that experience with my teammates on our 4x100 relay team made it even more special. Even though things didn't go exactly how we hoped, we trusted each other and relied on the work we had put in all season.”
One of his best memories was a 12th place finish, which fuels him to get onto the podium next season as one of the top eight finishers in Ohio.
“Finishing 12th at the state meet gave me a lot of confidence and motivation heading into my senior year,” he said. “The top eight are an elite group, and getting there takes a rare combination of speed, strength, endurance, and more than anything, it requires unwavering self-belief. The 400m is arguably the toughest race in track because it challenges you just as much mentally as it does physically. At that level, it's anybody's race on any given day, so you have to be ready to step up when the opportunity comes.”
“I'm putting in a lot of extra work this offseason with my trainer Sam Faulkner and focusing on becoming stronger both mentally and physically. My goal is to earn a spot on the podium at the state meet next spring.”
Before he can worry about next track season, Titley is gearing up for the start of what he hopes will be the best football season of his young career. Practice begins on Monday, and he is ready to make history with his team, building on his performance from last season.
“Last season was incredibly special because of the group of guys we had,” he said. “We had a lot of talent, but more importantly, we played so well together as a group, all working toward one common goal. The experiences we had together as a team built the chemistry that helped us succeed on the field. We became a pretty close-knit group, and I think that showed every Friday night.”
“Making it to the Final Four meant a lot for our team and the entire Tipp community. It felt like the whole town had our backs every step of the way.”
“It felt like we had a target on our backs because of the success we have had in previous seasons, but we embraced that challenge instead of shying away from it, and I think that mindset played a big role in our success. Being part of such a successful team and such a great group of guys is truly something special.”
But last year was last year, and he is not satisfied with the past. He is ready for another league title and deep tournament run.
“Leadership from our senior class is going to be a huge part of our success this season,” Titley said. “Having experienced players who have been through big games and understand what it takes to win helps set the standard for our younger guys. Last year's seniors did that for us, and now it's our turn to lead by example. If we stay connected as a team and keep working as one unit, I believe we have everything we need to make another deep playoff run.”
“Personally, I've spent the offseason focusing on getting stronger, faster, and becoming a more complete player, but I've also put a big emphasis on the mental side of the game. I've always believed that it takes a strong body to win a battle, but a strong mind to lead an army. Football is also just as much mental as it is physical, and having confidence, discipline, and the right mindset makes all the difference when the pressure turns on. My goal is to be a leader for my teammates and do everything I can to help our team earn another opportunity to compete up in Canton.”
Success and hard work have him focused on not only a big senior year, but continuing his career beyond high school. Right now, he is not sure what direction that will take, but his options are open.
“I am interested in continuing my athletic career after high school, and I'm keeping an open mind,” he said. “I have had conversations with a few college coaches, but I'm still exploring my options and trying to find the right fit academically and athletically.”
“Right now, my focus is on making the most of my senior year and seeing where it takes me. Academically, I'm still deciding exactly what I want to study, but I'm interested in fields like engineering and business. I'm excited to see what my senior year brings.”
