Tipp girls basketball camp a success

The excitement that was evident in the gym last week showed that the future of Tippecanoe girls basketball is going to be extremely bright.

Coach Brett Kopp, his coaching staff and many current high school players hosted three days of youth camp at the high school, teaching a lot of fundamentals and hosting fun games for the kids. By the time the camp ended, the Tipp coach felt good about how the week went with the future players from Tipp.

“We had two camps, a middle school camp and one for grades 2-5,” Kopp said. “Both camps were really different. The middle school camp was more of a version of what junior high practice will look like and our expectations. The youth camp just gets them in the gym. They are learning to dribble at the second grade level with both hands, and when you get to fifth grade, it’s more about crossovers, between the legs, proper shooting and defensive things.”

“We ended the last day today with the hot shots and a lot of games.”

As important as it is to teach the game, it is equally important for the kids to walk out of the gym having a good fun week.

“This camp with the younger kids is about having fun and having a good experience so they are wanting to continue as they move forward,” Kopp said, “The girls are very competitive.”

Another important aspect of camp is the opportunity for his high school players to develop their leadership skills as they work closely with the campers.

“They are good girls and good kids,” Kopp said. “I told them when you are playing soccer, or volleyball or basketball, this is who they see. (The young kids) want them to be here, and they interact with them. When you have good kids, all of that stuff is easy.”

The numbers also jumped from 30 campers last year to 64 this summer, and Kopp feels getting them activity in the summertime is important.

*As for the high school team, they have competed in the Troy summer league on Monday’s this month, and the week I attended they played with a lot of the younger players. Tipp also traveled to Cedar Point last weekend to compete in the Midwest Live, the top high school basketball event in Ohio during the summer. It was played in front of dozens of college coaches.
