Vintage Tipp
To honor the 250th Anniversary and Memorial Day, the Tippecanoe Historical Society articles will not be a mystery picture, but will honor veterans from Tipp City.
Lavon Anson was a Navy veteran of WWII. He joined in May of 1943 and served for 33 months. Because he had to take swimming lessons, he missed his first deployment. While waiting, that ship sank, and all were lost. In August, he boarded the USS Wilson and stayed for the remainder of his service. He eventually became a trainer on the anti-aircraft guns. On August 16, 1945, a kamikaze hit his ship in his area, and five of his shipmates were killed. Out of the 148 Destroyers that served on the "Okinawa Picket Line," 122 fell victim to kamikazes and were lost or damaged.
This information is from the May 24, 2006, edition of the Independent Voice. The very long article can be read in Lavon's file at the museum.
The museum is open Saturdays 10-12. Note that on Saturday, May 16, it will close at 12:00 so Society members can honor Gordon Honeyman by attending his services. For questions or information, call 937-698-6798 or 734-845-6520.
