Tipp softball sweeps Sidney
The weather didn’t cooperate last week as the Tippecanoe home softball game against MVL foe Sidney was delayed after Tipp built an early lead against the Yellow Jackets. The Red Devils took to the road to complete that 8-3 victory and followed that up with a 13-1 win against the Yellow Jacket in their regularly scheduled game. With the two wins, Tipp closed in on .500 as they stood 10-11 on the season.
“First off we made the plays that needed to be made,” Tipp coach Charles Tackett said. “A few girls came through and had some nice hits with runners on. We’ve been struggling with that but the last couple weeks it’s been rough because we have faced some of the better teams in our league and those types of games make you stronger for tournament.”
“We are excited about the potential to do well even though our record doesn’t look very well, we are battle tested and feel like we could do well. These girls are resilient. They work hard. They listen and they want to do well for each other and that’s a great combination moving into our second season.”
In their opening game against the Yellow Jackets, Tipp led 7-0 after two innings of play. They watched as Sidney scored three runs late, but Tipp had the game under control as Audrey Davis pitched the complete game for the win.
Roo Snell led Tipp with three hits on the day while Davis and Charlize McCormick each added a pair of hits. In the five run second inning, Snell and McCormick each drove in a run with a hit and Lilly King reached on an error, allowing another run to cross the plate for Tipp.
Strawser singled in a run in the fourth to close the scoring for Tipp.
In game two, both teams battled for most of the game with Tipp holding a slim 2-1 lead heading into the sixth. The Red Devils then exploded for nine runs in that frame to push their lead to 12 runs, and the run-rule took effect as Sidney could not close the gap in their half of the inning.
Davis had three hits to lead Tipp while McCormick drove in six runs to help the Tipp offense. While Davis got the win in the opener, Jaina Drum pitched the complete game allowing six hits and the one earned run.
“McCormick had a great day, and I didn’t realize she had eight RBIs, which is great for her,” Tackett said. I thought Drum and Davis pitched well. We moved some people around defensive wise because we just had to get some things fixed and we thought those moves did pretty well.”
