Tennis squad continues MVL dominance

WIth both teams coming into their first meeting unbeaten in MVL play, both Tippecanoe and Greenville were looking to make a statement last week. The Green Wave did just that by pounding out 18 hits and built an early lead to defeat the Red Devils 17-1 to send Tipp down to their first league loss of the season.

Four players each had three hits in the game as Greenville built a 14-1 lead after two innings and never looked back. For the Red Devils, they had trouble with Ella Oswalt as they could only muster five hits on the day.

“They are a good hitting team and they found all the holes,” Tipp coach Charles Tackett said. “We didn’t find any holes, but I was happy with the way we hit.”

“We are getting balls put in play, we just aren’t getting as many holes as they were. 1-9 they hit, we are still trying to find our 1-9 to put balls in play.”

Jocelyn Shelton was the lone bright spot for Tipp with a pair of triples, and Roo Snell did have a double but it wasn’t enough.

Greenville scored five runs in the opening inning to take the quick lead, all with two outs. The big play came with Blumenstock singled in a run, and on the same play, a Tipp error allowed two more runs to cross the plate.

Tipp scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first as they came out hitting. With one out, Shelton ripped a triple to right and she came into score when Snell doubled also to right. It was a fast start for the Red Devils, but they could not score any more in that inning and they trailed 5-1.

An inning later, Greenville put the game away with a nine spot. Eight out of the first nine batters in the inning reached base in one fashion or another. It was 14-1 before Tipp could retire another batter, and they finally got out of the inning with a strikeout against McMullen.

“We have faced some good pitching on our (spring break) trip, but those teams down there were not as complete of a team as this team is,” Tackett said. “They guys are all hitters.”

“We just have to get better and hit with them. They are looking to go on a long tournament run, you can see that with them.”
