Tipp Soccer: Boys top Piqua 5-0, Girls tie
With the tournament draw now behind us, the Tippecanoe soccer teams can focus on trying to capture the league titles.
Both squads made the trip to battle Piqua in conference action, with the boys defeating the Indians 5-0. The girls finished with a 1-1 tie against Piqua. That tie for the girls knocks Tipp down to 6-0-1 in the MVL, and their lead over Troy has been cut to a half game.
The previous night, the Tipp boys jumped out to a three goal lead and never looked back for a 5-0 victory to remain tied with Troy atop of the MVL standings.
Wes Tipton started the scoring for Tipp with a score in the box scramble around the net, giving Tipp a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game.
Six minutes later, Griffin Federle scored on an assist from Mason Mader to push their lead to 2-0.
The Red Devils had their shots on goal in the first half but could not capitalize on several chances. Mader ripped a shot from 15 yards out which was saved by the Piqua keeper. At just under the 27 minute mark, Tipson nearly scored again, but his shot went wide right.
Both Mason Lopez and Brayden Kocher had shots on goal before Kocher found the net with 6:37 left in the opening half, giving Tipp a 3-0 lead at the half. Even with the lead, Tipp coach Joel Slyman knows the guys have to make plays happen at a better rate.
“We put priority on executing things, and we are kind of falling short of that and maybe that’s just kind of the lull of our season,” Slyman said. “We don’t have as many big matchups that we did in the beginning of the year. We have great effort and intensity, but guys are not putting a huge emphasis on the execution part and it’s showing in some of these games.”
“We are going to continue to work on that, and guys have to hold each other accountable, but it is good to get another shutout and a win.”
In the second half, Jacob Newsome and Mader each scored for Tipp to cap the 5-0 victory.
After a big conference game earlier this week against Sidney, Tipp now heads to Alter in their final big non-conference test of the season tomorrow night in a game to prep for the postseason.
“Alter has one of the toughest schedules in the state,” Slyman said. “They will be battle tested and ready, and it’s a road game for us.”
*Also last week, the Tipp girls defeated Carroll 3-0 on the road as they received goals from three different players: Marin Dakin, Grace Fultz, and Maryn Perrault.
