Garmann Miller earns Design Award for MVCTC project

Garmann Miller earns IIDA Ohio Kentucky Design Award for MVCTC project - Miami Valley Career Technology Center recognized as Best in K-12 education design

Garmann Miller has earned the 2026 International Interior Design Association Ohio Kentucky Chapter Design Award for Best K-12 Project for its work at Englewood, Ohio-based Miami Valley Career Technology Center. The honor was presented during the recent IIDA Ohio Kentucky Chapter’s annual awards celebration at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Co-funded by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, the MVCTC project broke ground in May 2019 as the largest single building in OFCC’s K-12 history with approximately 565,000 square feet of new and renovated space under one roof. The new career tech space improved school safety for students and staff, modernized 50-year-old facilities and infrastructure, and allowed for more students to be accepted each year at MVCTC.

Becky Baumer, IIDA, ALEP, an executive director at GM, and Eric Schmiesing, AIA, architect, accepted the award on behalf of the project team.

“This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects both the quality of the design and the collaboration required to bring a project of this scale to life,” said Baumer, who is an Accredited Learning Environment Planner and NCIDQ certified Interior Designer. “Every space was thoughtfully designed around the students, programs, and unique hands-on learning happening at MVCTC.”

MVCTC’s campus serves approximately 1,650 students from 27 partner high schools and supports 43 education programs across 10 career pathways.

Baumer noted a goal of MVCTC Superintendent Dr. Nick Weldy was met. “One of Dr. Weldy’s goals from the very beginning was for everyone involved in the project to listen to one another and work toward a shared vision,” she said. “So many people brought their expertise, ideas, and commitment to the table, and we’re proud of what was accomplished together.”

The IIDA OH-KY Design Awards recognize excellence in interior architecture and design, design innovation, material selection, visual impact, functionality, execution, and craftsmanship.
