Red Devils earn win against improved Green Wave squad

There was no running clock in play last Friday night as the Tippecanoe boys basketball team traveled to Greenville for a MVL matchup. In years past, when these two teams met, the mercy rules have been known to take effect. But this year, the Green Wave competed much better and fell short of the Red Devils 68-51.

It was a game that Tipp never felt threatened, but the Green Wave would counteract Tipp’s runs to stay within 20 for most of the game.

“We came out with a 17-point win, and it wasn’t pretty, but we will take it,” Tipp coach Brock Moon said. “You are going to have wins like that in a long season, and that was ours.”

Tipp struggled to control the Green Wave offense at times, giving up easy shots, and Greenville knocked them down. But Moon stated that it was big for Greenville to knock down some big shots for them.

“I thought we were poor defensively at times, but credit to their kids, they hit some big shots,” Moon added. “I told our kids, if you let them get rolling a little bit, that bucket starts looking a little bit bigger.”

“I thought we gave them some easy ones early that kind of opened things up for them, and their confidence began to grow. It is something for our kids to learn.”

Midway through the opening period, Tipp led by one before Hudson Ganger connected on a pair of threes to put Tipp in front 12-5 with 2:51 left in the opening period. After Greenville cut their deficit to five, Tipp settled back in and took a 21-13 lead after the opening period.

Tipp led by ten at the half, and it was a fast 10-2 run in the third that put the lead out to 47-29. During the run, Colin Turner connected on a pair of shots. The Red Devils led 52-37 heading to the fourth.

Leading the way for the Red Devils was Bryton Otto who scored 19 in the win for Tipp. Also scoring double figures was Turner with 15, Bailey with 11, Ganger and Hunter Alvarez each scored ten.

“Bryton played really well inside and the Barr kid is probably the most athletic kid in the league,” Moon said. “I thought Otto did a nice job on him.”
