Vintage Tipp

The Tippecanoe Historical Society mystery picture from last week is of four barbers in front of their shop. It was located where the downtown Monroe Federal now sits. They are, left to right, Garfield Baldwin, Conrad "Cooney" Bowmaster, Leslie Eickhoff, and Tom Herring. Cooney lost a leg while jumping onto a freight car and was famous for his wooden one.

None of the shops took appointments. Customers opened the door and asked, "How many ahead?" The answer determined whether they stayed or came back later for a 35-cent haircut.

This information is from Susan Furlong's book "Tippecanoe To Tipp City.” We have more barber shop information in the museum files.

The museum will be closed in January and February. You are welcome to call 937-698-6798 or 734-845-6520 with any questions or to schedule an appointment.
