Milton-Union Winter Sports Roundup
In the midst of a busy holiday season, the bulldog athletes haven’t stopped. Many of them have risen to their challenges and come out victorious, while others have struggled to reach their pre-season goals.
Girls Basketball:
On Dec. 22, the girls took a late-game loss to Brookville, 67-63. The ‘dogs lead 19-14 in the first quarter as junior Addi Case attacked the game from the start but ended up losing in a fourth quarter run by the blue devils.
Case ended this game with 21 points (six three-pointers), five rebounds, and five assists. Also contributing was Sophie Layman with 10 points, three rebounds, and four blocks. Kate Copp added eight points, and Stella Blackburn added seven. This loss brought their record to 6-4, 4-2 Three Rivers Conference (TRC).
The team came out a week later with a redemption win over Houston, 67-60. Case was the leading scorer with 23 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Copp added a close 19 points, and Michaela Firks with 12 points. Firks grabbed 15 rebounds and pulled off nine assists, making her just shy of a triple-double. Other scorers included Layman with eight, Blackburn with four, and Layla Fulton with one.
Following some back-and-forth games, Firks was nominated for the Dayton Daily News Athlete of the Week due to her impressive play in both the games against Brookville and Houston.
And the nominations don’t stop there! Both Case and Firks have been chosen to play in the Bill Moss All-Star game following the conclusion of the season.
Boys Basketball:
In a tough battle, the boys basketball team was able to win over non-conference team Franklin Monroe in a late December matchup. They won by just three points, 58-55.
The teams ended the fourth quarter tied at 46-46, forcing overtime play. However, the ‘dogs outscored, 12-9. Junior Levi Brumbaugh contributed 23 points during this game while adding seven rebounds, three assists and five steals. Hunter Fraley also brought in 12 points while Wes Schommer had ten. With this offense and just as much defensive fight, they pulled out a win and improved their record to 3-4, 1-4 TRC.
Continuing their nail biting game saga, the boys lost to Newton in a close game, 48-45. They were leading after the first half and stayed close by at the half, but the Indians pulled away in the third quarter. Even though the ‘dogs attempted to come back in the fourth and nearly did, Newton continued steady play,
Brumbaugh led the team with 14 points, five rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Carson Fulton produced 12 points for the team, which allowed them to stay in the game. However, their record fell to 3-5 overall.
Finally, the ‘dogs competed in a conference game. However, they fell to Bethel, 53-23. The bees outscored Milton throughout the entire game, making it hard to close the gap. Brumbaugh paced the team with seven points, but wasn’t able to outdo Bethel's early-game rhythm.
Now, their TRC record stands at 1-5.
Wrestling:
Junior Eli Deeter was able to take a sixth place finish at the GMVWA Tournament that was held at Butler High School.
But Deeter found himself placing higher just a few days later at the Troy Invitational. He took first place in the heavyweights. Also placing were Seth Lowry, second at 132, Jacob Lightner, fourth at 120 and Jesse Williamson, fifth at heavyweight.
