Devotions From Calvary

What Doesn’t Change?

The tides seem to roll in many folks when it comes to the changing of the seasons. September brings about the vestibule of Fall as we begin, reluctantly, to say goodbye to the weeks of Summer. The joy that was experienced during the summer months as many were entertained by the outdoor living of camping, fishing, swimming, and hiking. While many others found their niche in traveling on vacations, seeing the sights that were on their bucket list. Yet as the weeks go by, those moments become no more than a memory in the scrapbook of our minds, along with the untold number of pictures on the phone.

Change will come as the months roll by, and though we would like to wish away the briskness of the cold mornings and the coolness of the wind, change will eventually come. The grass becomes still as each blade feels the morning dew pressing upon it. The trees begin to make ready their months of dormancy as the chilly fog begins to blanket their branches. Yet even nature fully understands that change comes.

Throughout our lives, each of us has not only experienced the changing of seasons, but we have also experienced the particular changes in our lives. Some changes have been for the better and seemingly brought prosperity and growth, while other changes may have altered your life. Altered it in such a way that redirection is not an option. Our lives are based on decisions and discernment, as we try to make a rational and right choice for our next step, only to realize at the end of it, we find the outcome.

However, can I give you some hope, some encouragement, a sort of peace that no matter what the changes in our lives that we face, there is something that does not change. In fact, it cannot change, for if it does change, then it will cease to be what it is. Every promise found in it will become void, and every corner of value of it will no longer hold its worth if it becomes in the least distorted from the purity and virtue of it.

Scripture tells us that God’s Word does not change, nor can it change. For if God’s Word would change in the slightest, then God Himself would be found a liar of His Word. Titus 1:2 tells us “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” In fact, since scripture reveals God’s Word as His Son in the flesh, we then can read in Hebrews 13:8 that says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.” These two verses alone cry loudly with great force, indicating that not only can God not change, but His Son also. Every promise in the Bible, every truth in the Bible, every command found in the Bible is directly from the heavens where the Word of God is settled. In the Book of Psalms, we read in Chapter 119, verse 89, “Forever, O LORD thy word is settled in heaven.” In other words, God’s Word has been as if it is etched in stone, unable to be altered, erased, or adjusted. God’s Word does not, nor can it, change. And if God’s Word does not change, then how grateful we must be to have a God that is steadfast and true.

Season will always come and go, circumstances may alter our lives, and decisions may change our directions. But rest assured, you can turn to any page in the Bible and know with great assurance that God will not change. May the Lord help us to rest in that fact, even through the whirlpool of different outcomes, that we can know, love, and serve a God that doesn’t change.

May the Lord Bless you greatly – Pastor Greg Steinke
