Tipp earns shutout, gets back on winning track

For the first time in over two weeks, the Tippecanoe girls soccer team celebrated a victory after a 3-0 win against league foe Xenia last week. Back on opening night, Tipp shut out Greenville but has lost three straight games since then before finally breaking the three-game losing streak.

“We came into this game after a spell of a couple of poor performances, so playing hard from the jump was certainly a priority for sure,” Tipp coach Brent Palmer said.

Early in the game, Marin Dakin put the first pressure on the Xenia keeper with a shot that was wide right of the goal, then a minute later, Maryn Perrault ripped a shot from 20 yards out that was deflected away by the keeper, keeping the game scoreless. Finally with five minutes gone in the game, the Red Devils struck, and it was senior Kendall Davis who delivered with a shot from 15 yards out that landed in the upper corner to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.

That’s how it remained until the 28:25 mark of the first half when Perrault struck again. It was her fourth goal of the season and slid one past the keeper in the box to give the Red Devils a 2-0 lead. “Not only was it her fourth goal of the year, but coming into the game, she led the team in assists,” Palmer said. “She is tough to play against, and she works really hard. She has been a great asset up top.” Davis missed a scoring chance for Tipp late in the half, then inside of two minutes, it was Maddie Hook who ripped her shot just left, keeping the game 2-0 at the break.

Tipp really controlled the pace all night and had several chances in the second half.  Julia Burgbacher added an insurance goal with 14:22 left in the game when she hit a laser from 30 yards out. This gave Tipp their three-goal cushion, and they went on to capture the win for Tipp.

“We had to make some adjustments because we have been leaking some pretty poor goals over the past couple of games,” Palmer said. “We figured we would be more difficult to score on and we did some good things tonight.”
