Monstera Deliciosa

Basic Info:

Monsteras are a staple in a houseplant lover's household. They are known for their big leaves with the fenestrated leaves. There are many different varieties or names for Monstera, such as Swiss cheese plant or split leaf philodendron. I quite often get asked if the holes are meant to be there or if bugs are eating the leaves when people see a monstera in my displays. In nature, monsteras climb upwards on trees or whatever they can get ahold of. Once wrapped around something, they will send out aerial roots that will help attach to whatever surface they are on. A good way to get your plant to produce bigger leaves is to train it to climb upwards.

Care:

I water my monstera about once a week to every 10 days or so. It is okay to forget about them every once in a while. A good telltale sign that it is thirsty is that the leaves look a little limp or pale. Avoid bright direct sunlight, their leaves can get burnt. They tend to do best in bright indirect light, or for example, an east-facing window. Sometimes the plant can start to lean towards the light if it is not getting enough. When repotting, use more of a chunky mixture with a well-draining soil. Monstera’s do not mind being root bound for a little bit. Moss poles are a great addition to a larger monstera to help climb upwards.

Additional Info:

Propagation for a monstera is easy, just cut a piece off under a node on the stem of the plant and pop it into a container of water. My cuttings thrive in my fish tank. They are considered to be toxic to animals, so keep in mind when bringing them into your house.
