Cincinnati Open: Alcaraz, Swiatek Win First Cincinnati Titles
FINALS BRIEFING for Monday, Aug. 18, 2025
1) No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz def. No. 1 Jannik Sinner when Sinner retired due to illness with Alcaraz leading 5-0 in the first set. It's the third time in the all-time history of the tournament for a retirement in the men's final: 2011 (Andy Murray led 6-4, 3-0 when Novak Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury) and 1952 (Noel Brown led 6-4, 0-6, 2-0 when Fred Hagist retired with a muscle strain to his right side).
2) Carlos Alcaraz is now part of the shortest (0:23 in 2025)) and longest (3:49 in 2023) Cincinnati Open finals since 1990. He becomes the third Spanish man to win the title after Rafael Nadal (2013) and Carlos Moya (2002).
3) (3) Iga Swiatek defeated (7) Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 to become the first Polish player to win the women's title. With the title she moved into second place all-time with 10 WTA 1000 titles, trailing only Serena Williams' 13. She also will move up to No. 2 in the rankings.
