District breaks ground on new bus and maintenance facility
The Tipp City Exempted Village Schools are moving forward with construction plans leading up to the building of a new prekindergarten through grade 8 building at the North Hyatt Street schools’ site.
Last week, the district broke ground for a more than $2 million bus and maintenance facility. The groundbreaking followed the removal this summer of the Nevin Coppock Elementary School, which was built in 1959.
The bus and maintenance facility contract was awarded to Level MB Construction of Troy, which district Treasurer David Stevens said submitted the lowest and best bid for the project. The base bid along with two bid alternates chosen by the district total $2,087,668. The Board of Education voted in March to accept the Level MB Construction bids and awarded the contract in April. Three other businesses submitted bids. The bids were within $120,000 of each other, Stevens said during a spring board meeting. The new bus facility is scheduled for completion in mid-December, said Liz Robbins, school district communication director. Three of the district's five board of education members attended the groundbreaking.
District voters in March 2024 approved an $87 million bond levy for building the new school. The district sold $78 million in construction bonds in September 2024. Plans call for building the school on land between the existing Middle School and L.T. Ball Intermediate School. The plan includes a three-story structure with grades K-2 on the first floor, grades 3-5 on the second floor, and grades 6-8 on the third floor. Each floor will include classrooms, flexible learning spaces and support areas. The building also features two full-size gymnasiums, an east side entrance and a school safety office.
The project also includes renovations at Tippecanoe High School and funding to abate and demolish Tipp Central and Broadway schools, Nevin Coppock and the Middle School.
The district is working with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission on the building project.
