Fallen Heroes honored at Tipp Memorial Day Event at Maple Hill Cemetery
On Monday, May 26, Memorial Day was commemorated at the Maple Hill Cemetery, located at 800 North Hyatt Street in Tipp City. The program was put on by the Frank E. Robinson American Legion Post #586 based in Tipp City.
Parade members gathered near Tipp City Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of Main Street and Hyatt and led a series of vehicles from Main down Hyatt to the cemetery. The parade included two World War II and Korean War-era vehicles, veterans driving their own vehicles, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and the Tippecanoe High School band. City Councilman Doug Slagel drove his World War II-era jeep, “Mud Puppy.”
At the cemetery, Legion Commander Melissa Fowle opened the program, and she and several other speakers talked about the importance of Memorial Day and remembering our fallen heroes. Phil Cox, a Trustee for Monroe Township, gave a brief overview of the cemetery and others in the area managed by the township.
Lastly, Mark Plummer, the chaplain for the Tipp City Fire and Emergency department, spoke before the gathered crowd, and then a member of the Tippecanoe High School band played “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Taps.”
After the ceremony ended, members of the public were invited back to the American Legion Post on North Third Street in Tipp City for soup and sandwiches.
