Track athletes compete at final meet before conference
In the final week before conference championships, the track team traveled to Covington on May 9. Many athletes performed at the top of their events, putting themselves in a good position for conference. In the boys 100-meter dash, Payton Mayfield placed second with a time of 11.47.
Last year, Mayfield was the conference champion in this race, and he will try to match that once again this year. Levi Tracy placed 12th in the 100-meter dash as well. He finished in a time of 12.05 against 31 total runners. In the boys 200-meter dash, Mayfield and Tracy also placed.
Mayfield took first place and ran the race in a time of 23.09. Mayfield was once again conference champion in this event last year and will go after that title again. Tracy placed seventh with a time of 23.83. This race consisted of 28 total runners. Charlie Lane competed in the boys 400-meter dash and finished in third place out of 26 total. He ran the lap in a time of 52.79 seconds.
In the 3200-meter dash, Colin Hinkelman took first place with a time of 10:09.86, and Andrew Oaks took seventh place in a time of 10:43.84. Senior Will Johns competed in the 110-meter hurdles and placed seventh with a time of 17.59 seconds. As for the relays, the boys 4x100-meter relay team placed third, the 4x200 placed sixth, the 4x400 placed fifth, and the 4x800 placed fourth.
In the field events, starting with high jump, Tracy and Johns tied for fifth where they jumped a height of 5’ 10”. In the long jump, Mayfield placed third after jumping a distance of 20’ 7 ¾”. Once again, Mayfield was a 2024 conference champion in this event and will go after it once more this year. Finally, on the boys side, in discus throw, Wyatt Ortiz placed seventh, throwing a distance of 128’ 3”.
The boys team finished in second place overall at the meet in competition with 16 teams overall. On the girls side of events, starting with the 100-meter dash, Bailie Wolfe placed seventh out of 26 with a time of 13.78 seconds. Also placing in the 200-meter dash, Wolfe finished in eighth overall in 28.29 seconds. In the 100-meter hurdles, Kate Copp placed fourth with a time of 16.95 seconds. Copp also competed in the 300-meter hurdles, where she placed third with a time of 50.57. Jenna Brumbaugh took first place in the 400-meter dash, finishing in a time of 1:00.12 against 21 total runners.
In the 1600-meter run, Sydnie Bartlett finished in fourth with a time of 5:49.98, and Aubree Bates finished in sixth with a time of 5:53.10. Finishing in fourth in the 3200-meter run, Madalyn Korte ran a time of 13:40.06 with teammate Amelia Iddings finishing right behind her in fifth. Iddings finished in a time of 13:59.33. As for the relays, the 4x100 placed ninth, the 4x200 placed fifth, the 4x400 in third and the 4x800 took first place with a time of 10:05.60.
Finishing up with field events, Copp placed fifth where she jumped a height of 5'10”. Brumbaugh placed third in long jump. She jumped a distance of 15’ 9 ¼”. The girls team placed first overall at the meet in competition with 14 total teams.
