The candidates were asked to answer the same questions to help provide information on them and their thoughts.

WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE?

“I am seeking this office to restore transparency, accountability and community trust in our school board. Over the past year, I’ve witnessed deeply concerning actions by the current board — decisions made behind closed doors, policies pushed through with limited public input, and a clear pattern of disregarding the voices of parents and community members. From controversial proposals like co-gender restrooms—defended with questionable solutions like surveillance cameras in sensitive areas—to the sudden removal of the two-reading policy for new measures during a Friday morning ‘special meeting,’ it’s clear that the board’s priorities are not aligned with those of the community. I’m running to bring the voice of the people back into the process. Our board should be working with the community, not around it.”

PLEASE LIST THREE AREAS YOU THINK THE BOARD OF EDUCATION NEEDS TO ADDRESS. And provide brief details on how you would address these:

1. School Culture and Teacher Retention
“We must address the growing crisis in staff morale. Teachers are leaving at alarming rates—not because they dislike teaching, but because they feel unsupported and undervalued. As the saying goes, ‘People don’t leave jobs, they leave leadership.’ Whether the issue lies with building administrators or central leadership, we need to build a culture of transparency and open communication. Teachers should be able to speak honestly without fear of reprisal. We must prioritize what is being said over how it's being said, remove unnecessary roadblocks and give our educators the respect and support they deserve.”

2. Curriculum Consistency and Clarity
“The board must do a better job ensuring that the district's vision and direction are clearly communicated across all levels—from administration to classrooms. Right now, even within the same grade level, teachers lack a shared understanding of new curriculum and grading systems. For example, our K-5 staff cannot consistently explain the district’s new grading approach, which causes confusion for students and families alike. Constantly shifting standards and expectations only create instability.”

3. Keeping Political and Social Agendas Out of Classrooms
“Schools should focus on education—not indoctrination. It is not the role of the district to define students' morals or personal beliefs; that is the role of families. Our schools must be places of mutual respect, critical thinking, and academic rigor—not spaces for pushing political or social ideologies. A recent example that deeply concerned many families was the board and superintendent’s push for gender-neutral restrooms with shared handwashing stations. The fact that such a proposal was even considered shows how far we’ve strayed from common sense and parental input.”

WHY SHOULD VOTERS VOTE FOR YOU?

“I have a long-standing commitment to supporting and mentoring youth in our community. Whether it’s through coaching youth sports, mentoring students, facilitating games, or guiding young people through important life decisions, I’ve consistently shown up to help build strong, informed, and confident future leaders. I’ve worked with students exploring college, military service, and the trades — helping them understand their options, their strengths, and the reality behind each path.
I'm not running for personal gain. I was asked by members of our community to step up and lead, and that’s exactly what I intend to do — with integrity, honesty, and a deep commitment to our children’s futures.”
WHAT QUALITIES WOULD YOU BRING TO THE BOARD?

“I bring proven leadership from both the private sector and the military. I’ve led small teams through influence to achieve results and larger groups by building a culture of trust and accountability. At the core of my approach is servant leadership—I believe in leaving every situation better than I found it.”
“For me, leadership is never about personal gain; it’s about strengthening the team and serving the mission. I will bring that same mindset to our district, working to rebuild a culture where teachers feel supported and valued. Right now, some of our best educators are questioning whether to leave the district or even enroll their own children here. When those closest to the classroom lose confidence, it signals a serious problem.”
“As a board member, I will be the change we need to see. I will hold leadership accountable, foster an environment focused on students’ needs, and restore trust by ensuring decisions reflect the values of our entire community—not just the priorities of a few.”

WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE?

“I am running for the Tipp City Board of Education because I care deeply about providing strong educational and enrichment opportunities for all children. Through my years of leadership and service with organizations such as Tipp City PTOs, the Tippecanoe Educational Endowment and the Tipp City Music Boosters, I’ve worked closely with school staff, led volunteer teams, and partnered with our generous community to support learning both inside and outside the classroom. I have gained valuable experience in collaborative problem-solving and know how to operate within an organization’s bylaws and budget constraints. I am running to put this experience to use in ensuring that Tipp City remains a place where our children’s education prepares them for the future, teachers and staff feel valued and appreciated, and where taxpayer dollars are used responsibly.”
I running as a write in candidate because over the last several years, I’ve appreciated the focused, efficient decision-making we’ve seen from the current Board of Education. When it became clear that Amber Drum would not be on the ballot, many community members expressed the importance of having committed, experienced volunteers on board. Reflecting on my experience and having the time to devote to the work, I decided to step up as a write-in candidate and to team with Katie Ernst to help continue the positive momentum our district is experiencing.

“Katie (Ernst) and I share a vision for advocating a high-quality, enriching educational experience—one rooted in accountability, transparency and strong communication with the Tipp City community.”

PLEASE LIST THREE AREAS YOU THINK THE BOARD OF ED NEEDS TO ADDRESS. And provide brief detail on how you would address these:

The Board of Education has several important missions. If elected, I would focus on ensuring the Board is accountable, transparent and maintains consistent communication with Tipp City families and community members. I would listen to and solicit feedback from parents, teachers, and community members. As the district continues to grow and especially with the current building projects and renovations—it is essential the Board keeps the community informed and involved. Financial decisions and budget considerations should be clear and demonstrate that the school district is being a responsible steward with taxpayer’s financial investment. Last, I would maintain the Board’s focus on providing meaningful and enriching educational experiences for every student and work to ensure that Tipp City Educators and Staff know the Board and community value their roles in providing excellence in education to each Tipp City Student.”

WHY SHOULD VOTERS VOTE FOR YOU?

“With over 15 years of active involvement in the Tipp City community and schools, I bring a proven track record of positive leadership and respectful problem-solving. As a parent of three children, I have first-hand experience advocating for students, collaborating with educators and administrators, and participating in our educational system in multiple roles. My involvement in our community has allowed me to understand the values that matter most to Tipp City families, as well as the strengths and the areas where our district can grow. I am passionate about supporting excellent educational experience for all students—not just for today, but for the future of our community. I’ve also had the privilege of working closely with Katie Ernst and have seen her leadership, work ethic, and dedication in action. I believe strongly that together, Katie and I can continue to move Tipp City Schools forward with a clear focus on students, academic excellence, and a strong educational foundation for long-term success. That’s why I’m asking voters to write in two names: Katie Ernst and Karen Kaibas—to ensure our schools are guided by leaders who listen, make informed decisions, and lead with integrity.”

WHAT QUALITIES WOULD YOU BRING TO THE BOARD?

“I bring leadership, respectful problem-solving, and a strong commitment to our community and its values. I believe in listening actively, seeking multiple perspectives, and becoming well-informed before making decisions. I deeply respect the teaching profession and the essential role educators have played in my own children’s growth and in the lives of all Tipp City students. I understand that a Board of Education member serves as a representative of the entire community—not to push personal agendas, but to uphold the shared values and priorities of Tipp City. My commitment is to be a thoughtful, collaborative, and informed board member who keeps students, families, and the district’s mission at the heart of every decision.”

WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE?

“I feel driven to run for elected office to serve our community as a board member and continue the progress that the current board has achieved in the past two years. I have been advocating and volunteering in a parent capacity in Tipp City Schools for a decade. Starting in 2023, I got more involved at the district level, participating in the PreK-8 building community engagement meetings and volunteering with the past two levy campaigns. I observed up close how the current school board works together to make positive changes that strengthen our district. When I discovered that Rick Mains and Amber Drum would not be on the ballot, I saw a risk that the positive direction might be disrupted. I felt compelled to join with Karen Kaibas and run as a write in candidate. I bring strengths to the role in three ways:”

“Tipp City voters want a board that upholds the values of our community and works cooperatively. Through my experience in the military, my work and volunteer experiences, and past service on boards, I have the collaboration and communication skills to step into the role of a member of the Board of Education. “

“Our district is undergoing a critical building phase, literally right before our eyes as we drive on Hyatt past the new PreK-8 building. My experience in the military, managing the construction of my squadron’s facilities gives me familiarity with the process, to support accountability and decision making from the board.”

“Karen Kaibas and I believe the mission of the Board of Education is to provide community representation while working closely with the superintendent and treasurer to provide accountability to taxpayers and uphold federal and state laws related to public education. Even as we have the facilities construction, the district continues to serve our students with enriching educational experiences. I will keep students and student success at the heart of my decision making.”

PLEASE LIST THREE AREAS YOU THINK THE BOARD OF ED NEEDS TO ADDRESS? And provide brief details on how you would address these:

1. “The construction of the new PreK-8 building and other facility renovation are a critical area for the board to address. I support frequent communication regarding the building features, schedule, financial accountability, and site transition updates as the project continues. Parents, students, members of the surrounding neighborhood, and community members should be supported with timely updates about the project.”

2. “The board hires and supervises the superintendent and treasurer who manage the day-to-day operations of the district. As an elected board member, providing them with community representation is critical. I will listen to community members, parents, and students and reflect those perspectives in my interactions with the superintendent and treasurer.”

3. “The board is responsible, through policy, decision making, and funding, to support students in and out of the classroom with enriching experiences preparing them for adulthood and the workforce. The district must be financially sound and accountable, operating with the funding available from local, state, federal and other funding sources. We need to value our workforce of educators and staff, as they collaborate with parents and administrators to educate our children. Karen Kaibas and I have met with Mr. Moran, Mr. Stevens, Mrs. Mahaney and her association’s officers, and other local leaders to educate ourselves about policy and funding matters which we may address as board members.”

WHY SHOULD VOTERS VOTE FOR YOU?

“I am an experienced decision maker, focused on delivering quality education for all Tippecanoe students. My goal is to work within the authority of the board to support student success. My experiences as a parent of students in the district, as a volunteer with children of all abilities, and my professional experiences as a veteran and an engineer contribute to my decision making as a board member.”

WHAT QUALITIES WOULD YOU BRING TO THE BOARD?

“I bring two decades of leadership in professional and volunteer settings, including prior service on multiple church and non-profit boards. My experience in the military taught me the power of listening, problem solving under pressure with limited information, and the critical importance of communicating effectively. I have brought my experience as a parent in each of the buildings over the past 10 years and my service volunteering with children of all abilities.”

LYDIA PLEIMAN

AGE: 38

OCCUPATION: Self Employed

FAMILY: I have a wonderful husband and an extensive close-knit family

PREVIOUS ELECTED EXPERIENCE: “I have held several elected positions. The position I am most proud of is in my work as Spirit Committee Chair at Hofstra University. This role allowed me to work closely with the Athletic Department for promotions, budgeting, and increasing student involvement. I was also able to learn directly from the University Trustees on the ins and outs of running a university.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE FOR VOTERS TO OBTAIN MORE INFO ABOUT YOU? "Lydia Pleiman for Tipp City Board of Education" on Facebook. I will also host tabling events around Tipp City for the month of October and look forward to engaging with the public.

WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE? “I'm the candidate for accountability and representation. I want to remove the culture of fear by providing transparency. I want our schools to move forward in a positive direction for everyone.”

PLEASE LIST THREE AREAS YOU THINK THE BOARD OF ED NEEDS TO ADDRESS? And provide brief details on how you would address these:

1. “Create more proactive transparency. As Tipp City schools move to embrace technological innovation, the board should lead by example. All meetings held on behalf of the school district should be recorded and proactively provided to the public. All meetings should require public notification on the district calendar so there is no confusion as to when meetings will occur and what will be discussed. Failing to provide this to Tipp City disproportionately targets parents with multiple children, shift workers and the elderly.”

2. “Respect for taxpayer dollars. At the demolition of Nevin Coppock, all of the playground equipment and benches were destroyed despite still being usable. In the weeks leading up to the school year, fully functioning equipment from chairs to library carts were placed in dumpsters. A full review of maintenance standards should occur, and the schools should adopt a stance that embraces preservation.”

3. “Reinforce Parental Rights in Education. Tipp City should provide a full, public review of Tipp compliance with the 'Parents' Bill of Rights' (ORC 3313.473). Tipp City should lead the way to exceed state requirements to promote parental involvement in the public school system.”

WHY SHOULD VOTES VOTE FOR YOU? “I am the candidate for all of Tipp City. I fiercely believe it is the duty of all public servants to provide transparency, not excuses. If you want to feel that your voice is valued in Tipp Schools; I am your candidate.”

WHAT QUALITIES WOULD YOU BRING TO THE BOARD? I have a sharp financial mind, experience with school management, and the conservative values that I have seen make Tipp City the wonderful place I grew up in and strive to preserve for the future.

WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I am a passionate beekeeper and think the best life lessons can be learned while out amongst the bees.”
