Lunch Break

Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County

Yearning

I decided to pick up a part-time job at a local coffee shop. It’s fantastic so far. Customers are kind, Coworkers are fun, and everything is going smoothly. However, just in time for the holiday spirit and my lunch break, I am haunted every day by the adjacent Pizza Parlor, Red Devil Pizza.

From the time the sign flickers and flashes “Open” at a bright and early 11:00 a.m., to the time I clock out, I am drooling and yearning to try Red Devil. My perfect pinpoint view of the neon sign can only be compared to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. Well, my salivation at the windows might be more comparable to that of a red light in Amsterdam.

Needless to say, I finally decided, after a long but fun shift, to treat myself to a greasy and delicious deli sandwich. After a short and successful game of Frogger, I entered the once DJs with undying optimism. I forgot how adorable a little deli can be. It was empty, in part since I stormed in right as Red Devil started heating the ovens and grills, but I just couldn’t wait any longer. Also, you just know a sandwich is going to be good when they sell cheese, slices of pie, and macaroni salad from the same spot. Or maybe I just like to pretend that I’m in a New York deli with Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Either way, I was excited.

I waltzed in, ordered an Italian Sub, and waited a short five or so minutes before being handed a box of greasy, meaty deliciousness. The crispy warm bread was smothered in hot, tangy tomato sauce, and packed full of pepperoni, salami, and my personal favorite, banana peppers. I absolutely adore banana peppers, and I will use any excuse to eat them, including just being in proximity to a jar. I loved how the savory banana pepper juice and Italian dressing soaked through the bread, just enough to soften each bite without making it soggy.

I devoured my sandwich, and of course, the loaf of bread that it was tucked between, and was full and satisfied for hours. I do wish there was some lettuce, or at least a small attempt at greenery, but only because it would make me feel less guilty about consuming six inches of meat and bread, not because the flavor of the sandwich as it is was anything short of perfect.

I know Red Devil Pizza is known for, well, their pizza. However, if you’re looking for a hot, tasty, and fulfilling meal for one, don't sleep on an Italian Sub. I know that the Open sign will glow again for me once more, and I will answer its call.
