Tipp advances to District Semis with 9-0 win over Greenville

For the second time in two weeks, the Tippecanoe boys soccer team had a dominant victory against their MVL foes from Greenville. Winning their second-round tournament game 9-0 last Saturday in a game that was called at halftime due to the OHSAA mercy rule.

The Red Devils advanced to the district semis last night against Belmont. They defeated Piqua on Saturday 1-0 on a goal with 15 seconds left in the game, to set up the game against Tipp. The winner of last night's game will advance to the district championship game at a neutral site this Saturday evening. That site has yet to be announced when the Gazette went to print.

“Next week is a different test,” Tipp coach Joel Slyman said after the Greenville game. “We preach you have to stay consistent in your preparation, the expectation is still to be consistent on execution and we kind of did that today.”

“We got nine goals from a lot of different guys, and it was fun to see everyone get in. We have 25 guys, and everyone got good minutes. It’s on to the good stuff now, you get these first couple of games out of the way and credit to Greenville. I respect their coach and they work hard. They only have one senior and they will be back.”

Maddox Robinson started the scoring in the opening five minutes as he headed the ball in at 35:28 to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead early.

Mason Lopez added to the lead three minutes later when he found the back of the net for Tipp’s second goal. With just under 30 minutes remaining in the half, Mason Mader hit Griffin Federle with a corner kick and he scored to make it a 3-0 game.

Tipp was pushing for the eight goal lead at the half to end the game, and they scored their fourth goal of the first half just over a minute later when Mader ripped a shot from 20 yards out at 28:02 making it 4-0.

Cam Smith then pushed the fifth goal through when he scored off a pass from Federle at 26:41. Smith scored again when he knocked one in off a ricochet from the post at 24:18 to give Tipp a 6-0 lead.

It was a matter of time because six minutes later, Owen Vonderheide scored on a header with Wes Tipton getting the assist. Gabe Morgan scored at 17:30 to make it 8-0.

For good measure, Jacob Newsome made it 9-0 with just over six minutes left for a nice insurance goal, keeping the margin above the eight goal threshold.

“There will be a different type of nerves when you get later in the tournament,” Slyman said of their matchup with Belmont last night. “When you lose a conference title, guys are that much more motivated to get the district title.”
