Tipp girls tie Sidney in huge MVL matchup
It had the feel of a playoff game, with both Tipp and Sidney battling for the top of the overall MVL standings. When the final buzzer sounded, nothing had been decided as both teams battled to a 1-1 tie in a huge conference matchup last week at Tipp Park Stadium.
“It was a tight game, we came out flat for a ten minute period in the second half, but they are a good team with a lot of seniors,” Tipp coach Brent Palmer said. “I am disappointed not to win but happy that we created enough chances.”
“We have to be a little bit more clinical in the final third.”
Even with the tie, Tipp did dominate the field position throughout the night, with Sidney only scoring on a penalty inside the box, setting up the tying penalty kick for the Yellow Jackets.
“We were in control, just a couple of minutes that got away from us,” Palmer said. “The PK obviously was tough and we were just not able to find that second one which was disappointing.”
Tipp put the pressure on Sidney early with good looks on goal. With 12:06 left in the first half, Maddie Hook snuck one through on a scramble around the net, giving the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.
“She played awesome tonight, all over the field and won a lot of 50/50 balls,” Palmer said. “On set pieces, she is always a danger to win those.”
The Red Devils missed a couple of other tough shots in the first half as the game went to the half with Tipp holding the one-goal lead.
Two great saves in the second half by Tipp goalie Macie Taylor kept the Red Devils in front until 22:26 left in the game as Sidney punched in a PK past Taylor, tying the game at 1-1.
Also recently, Tipp honored their seniors who have been a big part in the Red Devils program, and Palmer spoke highly of that group.
“These were players who were freshman when I took over the program, so it has been cool to go through the four years with them,” he said. “All four of them (Kendall Davis, Leilani Green, Jaina Drum and Ella Combs) are huge in what we do on and off the field. It was good to honor them.”
