Behind the Scenes - Production Schedule and Printing
Welcome behind the curtain for a look at how the paper is produced every week.
Ever curious about how the paper gets produced every week? Here’s a rundown of our schedule, along with exclusive video of the presses in operation and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery. Enjoy!
What’s a week at the Gazette look like?
So, how does that work? Well, we're a print newspaper, first and foremost, so all stories appear in print first unless they are "breaking news" and labeled as such. Here's the breakdown:
Monday evenings: the Gazette staff does final reviews and last-minute adjustments. When it’s approved, our production staff sends the paper via digital copy to our print shop in Delphos, OH. Overnight, Eagle prints the papers, stuffs any inserts and flyers, applies address stickers to every subscriber copy, and prepares papers for shipment.
Tuesday mornings: Papers are delivered from the print shop via courier to Tipp City, where a staff member meets the truck and takes delivery
Tuesday: papers are delivered to the USPS in Tipp City to mail to subscribers. Print copies are also delivered to our retail outlets for sale. (Hint: CVS gets the most copies, and Circle K gets them first!)
Here is a look at the print shop printing presses. From end to end, the machines are over 40 feet long. Our papers are printed at Eagle Printing up in Delphos, Ohio, and delivered via courier weekly to Tipp!
Wednesday: print paper is delivered to subscribers via USPS. Our staff meets to begin planning the next week’s paper, discussing upcoming stories, advertisements, and items for the events page and police blotters.Thursday: SELECT stories from the print version are shared on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, starting on Thursday and being posted through the weekend.
Friday: Stories from our writers and ads from our ads sales folks are finalized and submitted to the editor for review and approval. Our ad deadline is usually noon on Friday.
Saturday: All stories are proofread by at least three HUMANS before going to layout.
Sunday: The paper is pulled together and laid out in InDesign, then a PDF proof is distributed to the staff, writers, and ad sales folks for review and approval. This week’s subscriber mailing list is finalized and submitted to the print shop, where they create labels for every subscriber copy.
