Lunch Break - The Last Queen
Advice from local celebrities
As a slightly seasoned bartender at the local brewhouse, I have the opportunity to chat with some of Tipp’s most popular characters. One of my favorites, and one of the friendliest, is Tipp City’s beloved Mayor.
Although I’ve had many conversations of my own with Mr. Rogers, I’ve also eavesdropped on a fair amount from behind the counter. Out of the dozens of interactions with fellow townsfolk, there’s been one clear theme and place that he has mentioned time and time again. The Last Queen.
The truth is, Mr. Mayor isn’t the only person who’s placed the Last Queen bug in my ear. My mother has also mentioned over and over again that we need to visit the British-themed pub for brunch, and after a year of hearing about it, I decided we should finally give it a try.
Mr. Rogers raves about the traditional English breakfast served briefly during brunch hours, though I hate baked beans. I’m not the biggest fan of tomatoes, and I’ve actually been to London, so I can justify skipping that menu item.
Instead, I made the perfect choice and ordered the delicious apple butter pancake. One pancake might not seem like enough for a full, hearty breakfast, but at the Queen, one pancake is enough to fill one person for a few hours.
The pancake itself was thick and dense with delicious buttermilk dough, but the apple butter and candied pecan topping was genuinely incredible.
My mom and I made our trip to The Last Queen before a quick scan through a slightly disappointing wedding expo, and despite the glamorous baked options at each booth, I would genuinely like to cut into a slice of this pancake after saying “I do” more than any other wedding cake option.
The apple butter sauce mixed with flavors of cinnamon and autumnal spices was the perfect addition to a crisp early fall morning.
Although it wasn’t bangers and mash, the pancake was definitely the best English-inspired cuisine I’ve ever had. I’d even rank it higher than the fish and chips I actually ate in London. That being said, trying The Last Queen’s rendition of that dish is now the number one task on my to-do list.
