Girls volleyball gets their first season win

BY NATALIE SONNANSTINE

After a rough start to the season, Bethel girls volleyball finally notched its first win over Springfield. The girls dominated the court with a three-set victory, wiping out the scoreboard.

Volleyball is played in five sets per game, and the first team to 25 points, wins a set. If you win three sets, you win the overall game. Bethel won the game in the first three sets; the first set was 15-25, the second was 17-25, and the third ended 18-25. Springfield was trying their best to come back on the scoreboard, but Bethel stayed confident and aware and was able to finish the game strong.

Senior, Mia Sta. Ana says that because the “season has just started, there's still so much we're growing and learning from.” These girls have made sure they are continuing to help each other grow, and the upperclassmen are being amazing role models for the underclassmen. Sta highlights that because there are so many underclassmen on the team, she really wants to be “there for her teammates and be the best leader she can, whether that is on the court or cheering on the side.” Sta. Ana and the rest of the seniors have been working their best to help the next generation of volleyball players be the best athletes and supporters they can be. From supporting each other on the court to cheering on the sides, the volleyball team is a tight-knit group with well-spirited girls. The girls supported each other throughout the Springfield game with their cheering and helped motivate each other the entire time.

The volleyball program is overflowing with freshmen and sophomore players, and three freshmen made the varsity team this year. Ady Thompson, Hadley Rush, and Nicole Peirano worked hard over the summer to secure their spots on the varsity team, and they remain motivated to do their best on the court. Peirano says that the team “learned to play with each other fast”, despite playing on a team with new girls. Making varsity as a freshman is an amazing accomplishment, and Peirano highlights that this made her “realize her abilities and led her to becoming one confident on the court.” Her performance is excellent, and she encourages her team through the ups and downs. During the Springfield game, Peirano describes her main goal as “keeping her head up.” She says that being confident and “staying out of your own head as libero” is one of the most important things you can do for your team to keep them strong. Peirano hopes to continue to make her team proud and stronger, and hopes to one day play college volleyball, and become a teacher.

Bethel proceeds to work their hardest and put in full effort to help win more games. The commitment to the sport is something to admire about this team.
