Burgbacher scores twice as Tipp shuts out Troy
Phase one of the Tipp girls soccer goal is complete.
Heading into the season, the Red Devils looked to become the only unbeaten MVL champs in league history. They passed their first test last week with an impressive 3-0 shortened victory over Troy at the stadium. The game was called at the 32-minute mark of the second half due to lightning, with Tipp completely in control.
“It was a really important win for us,” said Tipp coach Brent Palmer. “This is a game always circled on the calendar for both sides, and especially for us falling short at Troy, which was the reason why we had to share the title with Butler last year.”
“It was a statement victory and a confidence booster. The winner of this game will put themselves in a really good position moving forward to take care of the business in the league.”
He also noted the JV got the win for Tipp, the first time in his coaching career at Tipp where the JV squad defeated Troy.
As for the varsity team, they didn’t waste any time setting the tone for this game. Julia Burgbacher found the net at 36:05, ripping the ball in from 15 yards out to give Tipp a 1-0 lead. Then five minutes later, the senior struck again as Burgbacher scored in a similar fashion and the Red Devils led 2-0.
“I feel scoring a goal early in this rivalry game was important for our team to get off to a fast start,” Burgbacher said. “We wanted to put the pressure on them by getting out to an early lead. Our team played so well together, I'm very proud of all my teammates.”
“Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving player, Julia has poured a lot into our program over the last four years, and it was a real testament of the kind of leader she is,” Palmer said.
Marin Dakin added a third goal for Tipp just three minutes later as the ball eluded the keeper in a scramble, and Dakin was there to finish it off.
“Three goals in 12 minutes against a rival like that is a great way to set the tone,” Palmer added. “It was great to see our girls rise to the occasion and embrace the moment.”
While Tipp scored early, the defense stood tall all night. Macie Taylor in goal never touched the ball as the defense in front of her was stellar.
“It was a full defensive effort tonight. In the 48 minutes we played, Macie didn’t even touch the ball,” Palmer said. “I can’t say enough about our back line, everyone was phenomenal.” The Tipp defensive back line consisted of Lily Fine, Ally Turner, Grace Fultz and Regan Kettel.
“We were very excited and played our best game,” Burgbacher said about the important win. “We realized our potential and what we are capable of moving forward. We played as a team and for each other. This win showed who we are as a team.”
Tipp returns to the field tonight at Xenia, then back at home next Wednesday hosting Stebbins.
