Boys Soccer use second half for big win over Stebbins
It was definitely a tale of two halves on the scoreboard last week as the Tippecanoe boys soccer team hosted Stebbins in a key league matchup.
Despite Tipp dominating the first half, the game was scoreless going into the half before the Red Devils poured it on in the second half. They cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Indians to maintain their lead in the conference.
Tipp peppered the Stebbins goalie with many chances in the opening 40 minutes, but could not sneak one past the keeper. Five minutes into the second half, Tipp finally put one in the net, which opened the gates for six goals in 25 minutes and the victory.
“Our guys could have been frustrated, but I thought we had an even-keel mindset at halftime,” Tipp coach Joel Slyman said. “We had to just stick to simple things, and they had eight guys behind the ball at all times. We don’t play against teams who usually do that.”
“They will frustrate you and make you play different ways, but our guys mentally were strong tonight. It got chippy at the end, but six goals in one half after not scoring in the first half gives guys confidence going into Thursday.”
In the second half, Owen Vonderheide took a pass from Maddox Robinson and headed it into the goal for the games first goal. This gave Tipp a 1-0 lead with 34:21 left in the game.
Tipp then went to work adding to their lead. At 22:42, Wes Tipton made it 2-0 from the corner, then a great cross by Brayden Kocher found Landon Morgan at 21:52, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Nearly four minutes later, a header on a corner kick gave Tipp their fourth goal as Vonderheide finished the play.
The Red Devils finished out the scoring with goals from Wesley Mayer and Logan McEntyre to cap the Tipp victory.
“We had some beautiful goals tonight,” Slyman said. “Guys are working hard in practice and reaping benefits in the game.”
*Also last week, Tipp defeated Xenia 7-1 in a game made up from the weather.
Robinson scored a hat trick for the Red Devils with three goals to lead the charge, with other goals coming from Griffin Federle, Mason Mader, Kocher, and Vonderheide.
Tipp returns to action next Tuesday, hosting Fairborn.
