Tipp Girl’s Soccer earns 5-0 shutout in Bethel scrimmage
As the Tippecanoe girls soccer team opened their season last night at Greenville, they first had to close out the preseason scrimmage schedule last Saturday as the crosstown rivals from Bethel made a trip to the stadium.
After a quick start that saw Tipp score twice in the opening few minutes of the game, the Red Devils earned a 5-0 victory over the Bees to head into the regular season with some momentum.
“It was a great team effort today from start to finish,” Tipp coach Brent Palmer said. “We had a lot of chances early in the game, and scoring a lot of goals and not being scored upon is a great recipe.”
“We are ready to set the tone starting Tuesday,” he added after the scrimmage. “Scrimmages are great, the summer has been great, but we are ready for things to kick in and be real in a sense. We will be ready to go.”
Tipp plays a lot of underclassmen, and Palmer feels they will bring a good mix with the older, more experienced players who hope to come together for a memorable season ahead.
“There are sophomores all up and down our lineup, and they have been seasoned by some of the older players,” he said. “It is a dynamic mix, and they are a group I am really excited about.”
In addition to the all-conference players who are back, Palmer mentioned a few of the players who could open some eyes this year, including Lily Fine and Grace Fultz as juniors who are hopeful of stepping into big roles this season.
Scoring for Tipp on Saturday included Mady Turner, Maryn Perrault, Kenzie Curry, Ellie Lickas and Julia Burgbacher.
“We are going to be a team who scores by committee,” Palmer said. “Usually, you have teams with one goal score 20-30 goals. But this is a group of five to seven different players who can score 10-15 goals, and that makes us dynamic.”
Tipp opens the season with a tough first couple of weeks. Following last night’s game at Greenville, they also play Bellbrook and Troy in the next two games. Palmer feels it is a challenging time period.
“Those are huge games (Bellbrook and Troy) both in the league and divisional seeding down the road,” Palmer said. “Having both of those games at home is great, but no doubt we jump into our season headfirst.”
Lily Stawser was mentioned by Palmer after a solid performance in goal against Bethel, and is being counted on this season in the net.
“This is her first year playing high school soccer. We were in a tough spot having only one keeper and she has done a great job,” Palmer said. “She is really raw as far as the goalkeeping skills, but she is picking it up quickly.”
