TMCS offers athletics, recreation programs
Volleyball, Flag Football sign-ups currently underway
Featuring recreational programs ranging from basketball and volleyball to pickleball and flag football, Tipp-Monroe Community Services (TMCS) offers activities for athletes of all ages and skill levels, with an emphasis on learning and having fun.
“We consider all of our sports to be learning programs, over competition,” TMCS Event Planner Misty McDowell said. “We want them to learn the sports, learn the rules, and have fun.”
“It’s a great opportunity for littles to learn which way to run, and the fundamentals of the sport,” she said.
“We’re a good introduction to sports,” Community Relations Coordinator Denise Gross said. “It helps introduce them to many sports, without having to be in a sports league.”
TMCS offers almost 50 different recreational programs to choose from, including sports like basketball, volleyball, and flag football. Other recreational activities include Plant Bingo, the annual Halloween Parade and visits with Santa, and funding for students attending summer camp at Camp Kearn.
“Something we did this year that was new was Plant Bingo,” TMCS Director Kathy Taylor said. “Jessica at Always Blooming got all the plants for us; now we can send 30 kids to Camp Kern, and they don’t have to pay.”
“The programs are doing very well,” she said. “Volleyball is very popular; we had a pickleball tournament, and it was very successful.”
“Volleyball has been huge,” McDowell said. “We’re one of a few rec leagues with volleyball in the area.”
Most TMCS events are free or low-cost, and assistance is available for those who can’t afford athletic programs like basketball or volleyball.
“When you go visit with Santa, we ask for two canned goods,” McDowell said. “You never get your wallet out.”
“Our Halloween Parade is the same way,” she said. “It’s a free event; there’s nothing there to buy. The kids aren’t going to ask you for anything.”
For athletic programs, TMCS can sometimes split registration costs for those in need, especially when registering multiple children.
“We can’t do tons of them, but we will help,” Taylor said. “We try to divide it and make it equal for everybody.”
Other programs include the Tipp City Sneakers walking club and the annual Run for the Mums, as well as an ongoing program offering goodie bags or t-shirts for those who walk 100 miles.
Junior baseball, soccer and lacrosse are also scheduled through TMCS.
“We have a number of programs outside of us,” Taylor said. “They were started by volunteers, and they’ve been going pretty well for many years.”
More information on recreation programs, and all things related to Tipp City, can be found online at www.tmcomservices.recdesk.com, or by calling 937-667-8631.
“We get a lot of questions,” Taylor said.
“We’re the 4-1-1 of Tipp City,” Gross said.
“We’ve been here so long, people depend on us to help them out,” Program Coordinator Kristina O’Meara said.
TMCS is currently in the midst of its annual school supply drive, and sign-ups are also underway for volleyball and flag football.
“There’s always something that we’re concentrated on,” McDowell said. “Right now, we’re doing our school supply drive. You can go on our website and get the list; they can be dropped off here, or at the drop-off locations.”
TMCS is also currently in need of volunteer coaches to help with rec leagues and teams.
“We like to have a coach and assistant coach for each team,” Taylor said. “I think we had about 28-30 coaches for volleyball and about 40 for NFL Flag Football.”
“We always need coaches,” she said.
