PD warns public about recent scams and fraudulent invoices

The Tipp City Police Department is warning the public about a recent scam involving fake invoices that appear to come from the City of Tipp City and reference the Board of Zoning Appeals.

While the documents may appear official, recipients should not make payments or provide personal information without first verifying the request directly with the city.

The individuals behind this scam are now sending emails that appear to come from the City’s Planning & Zoning Department and are impersonating the City Planner/Zoning Administrator. These emails falsely claim that a planning or zoning application has been approved and instruct recipients to request payment instructions to complete the process.

These emails are fraudulent.

Please remember:

• The City will never ask you to request wire payment instructions through email.

• If you receive an unexpected email regarding permits, zoning, planning, or payment, do not respond or send payment until you’ve verified it directly with City staff.

• Always use the City’s official phone numbers and contact information found on our website, not the contact information provided in a suspicious email

If you receive an unexpected invoice:

• Don’t send payment until you have verified it.

• Contact the city directly using publicly listed phone numbers or email addresses.

• Be wary of requests for immediate payment or unusual payment methods, such as through Bitcoin.

If you have received one of these notices or believe you have been targeted, contact Tipp City Police at (937) 667-3112.
