Inspiration for the Song “The Canal Jumpers Nine”

The Canal Jumpers Nine is an AI generated song I created and dedicated to Tipp City’s Vintage Base Ball Team: The Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers. As a former player, my goal was to showcase the history of 1860s base ball with a narrative using vintage terminology.

The old ballad style was used with the intent of giving the listener the experience of a game on a summer day. The cheer of the crowd, crack of the bat, and yells of the teams were images I wanted to portray. The Jumper’s home field is an open grass meadow located just north of the Tipp City Aquatic Center. In 1860, this meadow was on the banks of the old Miami Erie Canal.

The song depicts what a player and fans (also known as Cranks) would have experienced during a typical game. At this period in our history, base ball was a new sport that gained popularity as Civil War soldiers brought it back to their communities. The game between two rival teams was a major entertainment event.

The ballad features terms used in the early development of base ball such as a “Striker” (batter), an “Ace” (pitcher), “Behind” (catcher), and a “Muff” (a fielding error). My goal is to create a song that entertains and educates the listener about the early character of the game.
