Boys soccer closes out summer camp season
As the Tippecanoe boys soccer camp concluded last Wednesday evening, the camp schedule is now complete for the Red Devil athletes. The first day of practice is next week for fall sports teams as they look forward to the 2026-27 school year.
Coach Joel Slyman was pleased with how camp went for the Red Devils as both middle school and high school athletes worked together on their soccer skills in preparation for the upcoming season.
“It has been a good camp,” Slyman said. “Back in June, we had our little kids camp where we had about 180 kids come in, and it was a good one to put on with the girls team. This week was our team camp to ramp up the guys for the season.”
“We have 65-70 guys here this week, and it is nice to have our middle school guys be a part of our culture and our program. It is good for our high school guys to realize it is go-time.”
“We instill things this week of how we want to play, especially the younger guys who are coming from a club atmosphere not knowing what kind of formational things we do and situational stuff. It is nice to get them acclimated before tryouts and before the nervousness of scrimmages.”
Tipp lost several seniors, but they bring in 10 freshmen to a program that will have some open starting spots when the season begins for real in mid-August.
“We graduated five guys, and we have probably ten freshmen coming in, so we have a lot of new guys ready to go,” Slyman said. Those young players will also be thrown into things quickly as they participated in a summer tournament at Northmont last weekend. They head to Alter this weekend to get some work as a team.
“This is where opportunities are given to guys over the summer. Guys will rise above and seize the opportunity because we are going to play a lot of different guys. We have a lot of guys competing for starting spots that are up for grabs for the varsity team. They have realized that, and it will be good to see our new crew grow. If you highlight two things that are important this summer for our program, it’s these two weekends.”
Tipp opens practice on August 1 before hosting some key scrimmages against Botkins, Lima Shawnee and Bethel. The Red Devils open their season August 15 hosting Bexley, then head to Greenville on August 18.
